Today, Bvlgari has taken skeletonisation to the next level on the new Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon – to maximise light diffusion throughout the movement. This approach creates striking contrasts through contemporary decorative techniques applied to key visible components: the bezel flange’s polished slope, the finely rhodium-plated tourbillon balance and inertia blocks, and the sunburst-finished, rhodium-plated tourbillon bridge – refined modern finishes that subtly enhance the watch’s mechanical artistry. Each skeletonised component must have the right balance between efficiency and aesthetics, between resistance, reliability, and ornamentation. It means the margin for error is even smaller. The exposed nature of a skeleton movement demands absolute perfection in design, execution, and finishing.

The World’s Thinnest Flying Tourbillon

Drawing its power from its Roman heritage, the Octo collection by Bvlgari is part of a long architectural tradition. The octagonal shape was inspired by the coffered ceilings of the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine. Since its foundation in 1884, the Eternal City and the splendor of its monuments have always played a central role in the creative identity of the Maison. The Octo extracts a pure, modernist vision from this heritage, through a contemporary lens. This vision is reinforced by the monochromatic grey aesthetic of the ultra-thin Octo models. This stylistic signature underlines the desire to strive for purity and the quintessence of fine watchmaking. It forms a cohesive whole that enables Bvlgari to elevate ultra-thinness to the status of a watchmaking complication.
It is a fact: Bvlgari’s new Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon is now the thinnest tourbillon watch ever. Measuring 40 mm in diameter and just 1.85 mm in thickness, it is powered by the BVF 900 tourbillon calibre. This manually wound mechanical movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offers a 42-hour power reserve. Such specifications and the records they set showcase the exceptional prowess of the watchmakers and engineers at the Bvlgari Manufacture.

By applying its expertise in finesse to the tourbillon – its most emblematic precision complication – Bvlgari expresses the essence of its watchmaking philosophy. “The idea was to create a watch that encapsulates all our expertise. A Human Engineering Journey

The hallmark of the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon is its tungsten carbide main plate that houses the mechanical movement. Watches usually consist of a case containing the movement. For centuries, watchmakers pursued flatter profiles primarily for aesthetic elegance. Traditionally, watchmakers pursued thinness for greater elegance. This objective introduced unique challenges related to structure and stiffness. To solve this complex equation, the teams at Bvlgari developed a blend of advanced materials.

The new Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon features a bezel, case middle, and lugs crafted from microbead-frosted titanium, while the main plate is constructed from tungsten carbide. The two planar ‘crowns’ – each protruding ever so slightly from the side of the case, at left (8 o’clock) to wind the mechanism and at right (3 o’clock) to set the time – are fashioned from stainless steel and circular-grained; likewise, the ratchet, adorned with engraved geometric decorations, is rendered in circular-grained steel. For optimal legibility, the hour dial features rhodium-plated hour and minute hands set against a sand-blasted brass surface with an DLC anthracite coating – unlike its predecessors, the Octo Finissimo Ultra and Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC, which were regulators with two decorrelated hour and minute dials.
Perfectly complementing the watch, the integrated microbead-frosted titanium bracelet mirrors its ultra-thin aesthetic, measuring just 1.5mm thick—including the folding clasp. Once again, Bvlgari has masterfully fused complexity and elegance to create a timepiece of exceptional finesse.

Mobilising all the expertise of the Bvlgari Manufacture, this particularly complex project involved revisiting the traditional fundamentals of the profession to design a watch in two dimensions rather than three. This bold approach sparked fresh energy within Bvlgari’s teams, fostering unprecedented creative collaboration to tackle a challenge of this scale. Perfecting and rethinking techniques—such as returning to a two-hand display—added a deeply human touch to the entire endeavour.

To meet these challenges, Bvlgari’s R&D teams created new processes and techniques, securing eight specific patents covering innovations like the differential display, the integrated case middle and plate design, the bi-material case back, a new crystal mounting method, a novel barrel structure, the oscillator module, the modular construction, and the bracelet design.

Bvlgari’s pursuit of ultra-thinness began in 2014 with the hand-wound Octo Tourbillon. Since then, it has produced record-breaking innovations across multiple categories—the world’s thinnest minute repeater (3.12mm in 2016), the Octo Finissimo Automatic (2.23mm in 2017), and the thinnest perpetual calendar ever (2.75mm in 2021), which earned the prestigious Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). Launched in 2012, the Octo quickly became an iconic design in modern watchmaking. Just ten years after the debut of the Octo saga, the Octo Finissimo Ultra set an absolute record with a total thickness of just 1.8 mm. Designed and produced entirely by Bvlgari in Le Sentier, in the Swiss Jura, this caliber – first introduced in 2022 – now appears in a new version with crown winding and a sapphire caseback to reveal its inner workings.

The Tubogas Manchette harbors the Lady Solotempo Automatic BVS100, presented last year together with Serpenti Seduttori and Serpenti Tubogas. The Lady Solotempo Automatic—indicating hours, minutes, and seconds—combines the art of timekeeping with Italian allure, an ideal pairing with jewelry watches.

With a diameter of just 19 mm, a thickness of 3.90 mm, and 102 components, the Lady Solotempo calibre weighs a mere 5 grams. The first retrospective of the Octo Finissimo saga
Every Octo Finissimo model is both a technical achievement and a creative statement – an untried approach to traditional watchmaking complications, made even more radical by the pursuit of extreme thinness. In just 11 years, the collection has set an astonishing ten world records.

At Geneva Watch Days 2025, Bvlgari will for the first time present a detailed, educational retrospective of the Octo Finissimo story. Its style rooted in the octagonal geometry of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome, the Octo redefined watch design in the early 2000s, and introduced a new, bold, forward-looking aesthetic for the 21st century.

Drawing on its Swiss-based Manufacture expertise, Bvlgari embarked on a unique exploration of horological complexity – rethinking volumes and proportions. This vision led to the creation of the Octo Finissimo line, and later to the boundary-shattering Octo Finissimo Ultra models. The exhibition brings together the pivotal references that have so far marked this ongoing journey.

From the groundbreaking Octo Finissimo Tourbillon of 2014 – with its ultra-slim BVL 268 tourbillon calibre measuring just 1.95 mm – to the stunning Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon introduced in April 2025 at Watches and Wonders, with a case just 1.85 mm thick, each milestone creation tells the story of a singular creative approach. The exhibition also reveals how the Ultra and Finissimo lines complement one another, along with Bvlgari’s ongoing artistic collaborations.

Each Octo Finissimo reflects a quest for pure expression and technical excellence. Visitors to the exhibition will discover some of the collection’s most defining achievements, including the Octo Finissimo Automatic of 2017 – just 5.15 mm thick – a model that exemplifies the union of Italian design and Swiss mechanical savoir-faire through its minimalist aesthetic.

They’ll also encounter the prestigious Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar in titanium, which won the Aiguille d’Or at the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève and remains the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar watch with a thickness of only 5.80 mm.

In 2020, Tadao Ando expresses his vision of time on a watch made from black ceramic and featuring a transparent caseback bearing the architect’s signature. Laurent Grasso, in 2024, explored the perception of time through subtle visual effects. The finish creates an impression of depth, brought to life by the cloud of colours applied through a screen-printing process using metallic pigments. Further pushing these boundaries, the Octo Finissimo Sketch assertively displays the intimate mechanics sketched by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. Octo Finissimo Lee Ufan x Bvlgari
This year, the Maison welcomes Korean-born, Japan-based artist Lee Ufan into this continuing dialogue. Painter, sculptor, poet, and philosopher – Lee Ufan explores the connections between human consciousness, nature, and the universe. His art centres on perception and presence – on the emotional resonance of an object rather than its representation.

The Octo Finissimo Lee Ufan x Bvlgari is the result of a rich and inspiring exchange between Bvlgari’s Product Creation Executive Director, Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani and Korean artist, Lee Ufan. The design is based on one of the artist’s key themes: the contrast between a rock – static and limited – and the infinite reflections of a mirror. “I know Lee Ufan from his amazing paintings. Then I discovered his sculptures, where a big rock sits on a mirror – I was intrigued, at first you think that these two elements don’t work together, but in the end, it works perfectly”, said Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani.

Rather than containing the mirrored dial delicately accented with black hands, the Octo Finissimo case amplifies it. The result is striking: a titanium-cased and braceleted watch, issued in a limited edition of 150 pieces, each finished by hand with a unique titanium surface treatment.

The timepiece houses the BVL 138 manufacture calibre with micro-rotor, just 2.23 mm thick, for an overall height of only 5.5 mm. On the caseback, Lee Ufan’s handwritten signature marks this intimate object as a true work of art. After all, imagination is a matter of finesse.

Carving a dial – one of the thinnest components in watchmaking – from marble is no small feat. While the stone is strong in its raw form, it becomes delicate and brittle when sliced thin. With the addition of a new floor, the site has grown from 3,400 to 4,400 square meters. Its scale, along with the diversity of crafts it accommodates, enables Bvlgari to fully leverage the synergies offered by vertical integration.

Driven by global enthusiasm for the brand, Bvlgari is expanding its capacity for high-end case manufacturing by investing in cutting-edge industrial equipment, thus keeping pace with evolving market requirements. The upgrades focus on modernizing production methods, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing versatility and multi-skilled training. They also include optimised safety measures, improved work well-being for employees, and targeted measures to reduce the environmental impact of production. Notably, a new space dedicated to “Artmanship” – the fusion of Art and Craftsmanship – has been established at the heart of the manufacture.

The success of Bvlgari’s iconic collections – Serpenti, Octo Finissimo, Bvlgari Bvlgari, and its high jewellery watches – is driving a marked increase in demand for its dials crafted with traditional metiers d’art (artistic crafts and techniques). These dials, born from a convergence of rare expertise and artistic techniques, will now be crafted in a dedicated workshop for hardstone marquetry, peacock feather marquetry, gem-setting, and micro-painting. This new space is characterised by its dynamic rhythm, responsiveness, and creativity. Even more so than in the rest of the building, where significant efforts have been made to improve the work environment, the new Métiers d’Art workshop ensures an atmosphere of silence and calm, required for artisanal crafts.

The Saignelégier Manufacture is equipped with a range of large-scale production machines, organized into workshops capable that can handle both small and medium production runs, coupled with high-end artisanal applications. This setup necessitated a redesign of the existing spaces to improve the flow of people and processes, the exchange of ideas, and ultimately, the level of production excellence. This combination of industrial and artisanal processes is being taken to the next level in Saignelégier, where, for example, lacquered dials that won’t tolerate the slightest presence of dust coexist with intricate hardstone mosaics.

Furthermore, the Manufacture now also features an additional floor with a staff restaurant and an outdoor terrace, along with a new wellness and recreation area. Indeed, the redesigned Saignelégier facility places the well-being of its 130 employees at the heart of its design.

The roof, façade, and parking areas have been redesigned to accommodate solar power generation. These solar panels supply 25% of the building’s energy needs. Coupled with redesigned workflows that reduce electricity consumption, this underscores the commitment to sustainability at Bvlgari sites in alignment with requirements throughout the LVMH group.

The comprehensive renovation and expansion project at Saignelégier is part of LVMH’s ongoing investments in its watchmaking brands, naturally in Switzerland. On the far frontiers of expertise

Bvlgari has been crafting Haute Joaillerie watches since 1918, including one-of-a-kind timepieces that have stood the test of time and still contribute to its worldwide reputation. In the 1970s, its mastery of the art of watchmaking accelerated, giving rise to the Bvlgari Bvlgari collection (1975) and later to the Bvlgari Aluminium collection (1998) – of which the recent re-edition proved a huge success! Inspired by Rome’s artistic and architectural heritage, Bvlgari quickly distinguished itself with the unique Italian design of its watches.

Since 2012 and the launch of the Octo collection, what has now become Bvlgari Horlogerie (Bvlgari Watch Division) has introduced a string of accomplishments to the field of Haute Horlogerie: the world’s thinnest tourbillon watch; the thinnest minute repeater; the thinnest automatic GMT chronograph on the market; the thinnest perpetual calendar ever made; as well as the recent Octo Finissimo Ultra Cosc at just 1.7 mm thick. In all, Bvlgari has already set nine world records for thinness with its Octo Finissimo collection.

Such a feat is only possible if all the horological skills are perfectly mastered. To achieve this, Bvlgari Horlogerie began a long and ambitious process of vertical integration 25 years ago, which now enables it to lay claim to excellence. In addition to its headquarters in Neuchâtel, the Maison has a watchmaking Manufacture in Saignelégier and an Haute Horlogerie movement Manufacture in Le Sentier, in the Vallée de Joux. Some 500 people work for the watchmaking division in Switzerland.

The Vallée de Joux is one of the most important places in the Swiss watch industry. Nestling in this sheltered Jura region for more than two centuries has shaped history and given birth to some of the greatest legends in the discipline; watchmakers who have earned global renown for their Grand Complication watches. Today, the most prestigious watch brands are still based on this high plateau.

It was here, in the village of Le Sentier (1,900 inhabitants), that Bvlgari Watches acquired the Genta-Roth workshops in 2000 – a logical extension of the collaboration undertaken years earlier thanks to the vision of the Bvlgari brothers. Founded by two brilliant watchmakers, this movement manufacture perpetuates and develops unique and precious expertise. It is one of the very few to master the art of extreme miniaturisation, as well as striking mechanisms, making Bvlgari one of the greatest players in the realm of Swiss Haute Horlogerie.

The site, which became Bvlgari Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie in 2000, employs around 100 people. From research and development to final assembly, all components are designed and produced in-house: bar turning machines, computer numerically controlled machines (CNC) and electro-erosion machining are used to produce plates and bridges, gears and pinions, cams and flat springs – all with micrometre-level (0.001 mm) accuracy. The components are then carefully bevelled and decorated by hand, before being delivered to the various assembly workshops.

One of these is entirely devoted to striking watches, a rare phenomenon within the watch industry. Five master-watchmakers are dedicated exclusively to the assembly of exceptional timepieces such as the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater (two hammers), the Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon (three hammers) and the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar (four hammers). Bvlgari has mastered the entire range of this family of Grand Complications featuring movements housing up to 1,200 components. Among them, the steel gongs are meticulously crafted by hand to obtain the purest and deepest sounds. At this degree of excellence, each watchmaker is responsible for a given watch right the way through to the final casing-up, in a process that can take nearly six months.

The second workshop is devoted to Haute Horlogerie movements. This is where the Grand Complications are created, including the perpetual calendar and the tourbillon. These naturally include the Octo models as well as the Serpenti Seduttori Tourbillon ladies’ watch, whose BVL Caliber 150 is the smallest of its kind at just 22 x 18 mm. BVL Caliber 100, named Piccolissimo, represents the ultimate in miniaturisation with its 12.30 mm diameter and 1.3 gr weight. It is used in the secret watches of the Serpenti Haute Joaillerie collection.

The third workshop is dedicated to the so-called “classic” movements (outside the scope of Grand Complications). This is where the ultra-thin calibers come to life, such as the BVL 138 and the BVL 318: the first, a micro-rotor automatic movement measuring just 2.23 mm thick, powers the Octo Finissimo Automatic – the third world record in the collection; while the second, at just 3.3 mm thick, drives the likewise self-winding Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT– the fifth world record in its category. This workshop also produces some movements for the Octo Roma family, such as the BVL 257 Worldtimer caliber and the self-winding in-house BVL 399 chronograph caliber.

Jewellery is also a passion of the Bvlgari family as well as the foundation and the very essence of the House. Bvlgari Horlogerie can therefore count on the immense expertise of the workshops in Rome and Valenza for its gemset models. This close collaboration makes it possible to combine Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie in a manner unrivalled by any other brand.

Octo Roma Striking Tourbillon Sapphire BVL 206

The BVL 206 hand-wound movement of this new Octo Roma Striking Tourbillon Sapphire features an extremely graphic design. Finely skeletonised to form a star shape, the baseplate seems to virtually vanish so as to conceal nothing of the extraordinary watchmaking mechanism. This metal lacework is thus entirely exposed to the spectator’s fascinated gaze.

The flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock operates at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), carrying with it all the regulating and distribution organs in its fascinating rotation. The architecture of the movement, the openworked baseplate and the flying tourbillon ensure a 360-degree view of the heart of the watch.

While the 64-hour power-reserve indicator at 9 o’clock is visible through the back, the crown also features a rare and refined mechanism in the shape of a function selector. An integrated pusher enables the wearer to choose between winding the mainspring or setting the time. The latter choice involves a single press on the pusher, making a red dot appear on a bridge level with the crown. Once the adjustment is made, a second press serves to return to the first function and to secure the time-setting.

Octo Roma Precious Tourbillon Lumière BVL 208 SK

This Octo Roma Precious Tourbillon Lumière lives up to its name, as its movement is made of solid gold – an extremely rare occurrence. Adding to the difficulty of its crafting, the bridges and baseplate are finely skeletonised and decorated by hand. The model is further lit up by a chapter ring set with precious stones.

This BVL 208 SK caliber is a concentrated blend of Bvlgari Watches’ expertise in terms of artistic craftsmanship and decoration. Derived from the art of engraving, hand-skeletonisation consists in openworking the baseplate and bridges as much as possible, while ensuring they remain sufficiently sturdy to enable the movement to operate properly. The perfect balance between artistic expression and technical constraints requires real expertise.

The components are then bevelled, polished and satin-brushed by hand to create a glowing finish. The tourbillon bridge receives a special mirror-polished treatment. As its name implies, this complex technique consists in making the metal mirror-smooth, free of even the tiniest scratch and magnificently highlighting the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, the beating heart of the watch.

Finally, this hand-wound movement is endowed with a 64-hour power reserve displayed by an indicator visible on the back of the watch.

Serpenti Misteriosi High Jewellery Secret Watches BVL 100

A new mechanical caliber, an absolute icon: the new Serpenti Misteriosi masterpieces by Bvlgari embody new feats of miniaturisation associated with the jewellery and decorative excellence of the Rome-based Maison.

The new creations are all equipped with the new Piccolissimo mechanical movement, one of the smallest in the world, entirely conceived and produced within the Bvlgari Manufacture in Le Sentier. The BVL100 caliber revives the very small mechanical ‘motors’ that equipped all women’s watches until the
early 1970s.

Measuring 12.30 mm in diameter and 2.50 mm thick, the BVL100 caliber indicating the hours and minutes is housed in the head of the reptile within a dedicated container. The Manufacture leveraged its rich experience in the domain of Finissimo watches to create a very compact movement weighing only 1.30 grams. The extreme miniaturisation of its 102 components is vividly illustrated in the barrel featuring a total diameter of just 5.00 mm for a thickness of 1.47 mm and a spring that is 170 mm long before being wound. Moreover, to ensure the greatest inertia according to the very small size of the movement, the Manufacture opted for a white gold balance wheel. Pressing the snake’s tongue on the Serpenti Misteriosi opens the head to reveal the watch. A bidirectional crown located on the caseback enables manual winding and time-setting. This dual function operates by means of a system of reversers.

Octo Finissimo CarbonGold Perpetual Calendar

Bvlgari, again, revisits the rulebook with the Octo Finissimo CarbonGold Perpetual Calendar. This watch is reborn in high-tech anthracite carbon, offset by luxurious touches of gold. Bvlgari first presented this norm-defying blend of materials and textures in 1993 – an innovation made possible by the brand’s unique ability to envision materials from a “watchmaking jeweller’s” perspective. Objects of rarity, the Octo Finissimo CarbonGold Perpetual Calendar redefine the rules of modern horology – a stroke of style and innovation, a daring statement on the timeline of watchmaking.

The case, strap and dial are made of extremely lightweight, anthracite-colored carbon with a matte finish, while the display elements and the crown, crafted in luminous rose gold, offer a luxurious contrast against this high-tech backdrop. Requiring no adjustment before 2100, in this version the classic perpetual calendar complication takes on a resolutely contemporary look.

MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) has redefined traditional watchmaking since 2005 by creating three-dimensional kinetic sculptures for the wrist: Horological  Machines that are brought to life through collaboration with the brand’s “Friends” and are inspired by themes as diverse as science fiction, supercars and the animal  kingdom.

We then released our first co-designed timepiece in 2021 in Dubai, bringing Bvlgari’s colorful gemstones to MB&F’s Legacy Machines, fusing the best of two different yet  complementary DNAs and expertise.

Today, I am delighted to see our two Maisons unite again for a one-of-a-kind extraordinary creation, reimagining our brand’s most famous icon, Serpenti, into an  astonishing design powered by a beautiful MB&F caliber, in celebration of the Year of the Snake. Our collaboration is unique in the watch world because it bridges the two  souls of our Maisons and gives birth to a timeless treasure – a true collectible piece. The first-ever truly genderless Serpenti resonates with both contemporary gentlemen and ladies. It shows that superlative watchmaking can be generated by the unexpected pooling of talents like Max and Fabrizio.”

BVLGARI X MB&F: NOT THEIR FIRST COLLABORATION

In 2021, sparked by a chance encounter a few years earlier between Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, director of watchmaking creation at Bvlgari, and Maximilian Büsser,  founder and creative director of MB&F, the two brands released a first collaboration: the MB&F x Bvlgari LM FlyingT Allegra. This collaboration brought the exuberant,  colourful world of Bvlgari jewellery into MB&F’s Legacy Machines.

After the success of that collaboration, the two friends naturally wondered, what next?

For this second collaboration, Fabrizio and Max chose to reinterpret one of Bvlgari’s most famous historical creations – Serpenti, which first appeared in Bvlgari’s creations in 1948 – bringing it into the very mechanical universe of MB&F haute-horlogerie. Combining the vision and expertise of these two creative forces, the Bvlgari x  MB&F Serpenti slithered into being…

Reimagining Serpenti – an emblem of eternal rebirth and bold metamorphosis – into a Horological Machine required a complete redevelopment of this historical piece,  not only in terms of mechanical engineering and movement conception, but also in terms of case design and manufacturing. The Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti represents a  unique creation, born from an inspired encounter and a shared vision, where calibre and design seamlessly enhance one another.

AN INTENSE DESIGN PROCESS

According to Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, the design aspects “were a pleasure to create”, perhaps giving the impression that this part of the process was relatively easy –  but the hundreds of sketches and dozens of 3D-printed models attest otherwise. Contrary to a classic round case, which offers only a few dimensions to experiment with,  the case of the Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti could not be more complicated. Like an automobile, the view is radically different depending on whether you admire it from the  front, the side, the top, the back… and all those views must be equally satisfying.

Like a carefully-balanced equation with multiple variables, any adjustment to a particular angle or curve, although improving a certain view, can potentially destroy  another. This resulted in countless iterations of the Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti design.

CHALLENGING CASE MANUFACTURING

Once perfected aesthetically, the design then needed to be engineered and manufactured – and this generated a number of further challenges. The Bvlgari x MB&F  Serpenti case is all about curves, combined together to create a machining nightmare. The complex curves extend beyond the metal of the case to the five sapphire crystals,  including the snake’s eyes and the multi-facetted rear section – all treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides and providing large openings on the movement. This combination of curved metals and sapphire crystals is not only extremely difficult to machine and finish, but also incredibly challenging to make water- resistant to 30 metres.

“At MB&F we specialize in ‘kinetic sculptures which give time’ so it was definitely our calling.

Nevertheless, the biomorphic design of this watch created enormous challenges in terms of the case but also the movement,” shares Maximilian Büsser. “The intricate case  is entirely machined with 5-axis 3D mills and holds the five sapphire crystals which were not only extremely complicated to make but equally challenging to fit due to the  curved nature of the case and the desire for a water resistance of 30 meters”.

A COMPLEX MOVEMENT THAT BREAKS HOROLOGICAL CONVENTIONS

Inside the complex case, an equally complex movement that breaks all traditional watchmaking conventions, conceived and developed in-house by MB&F. From the  beginning, one of Fabrizio’s central ideas was to bring Serpenti to (mechanical) life by animating its eyes; this has been materialised as revolving hour and minute domes,  the left dome making a full rotation in 12 hours and the right one in 60 minutes. The paper-thin domes are machined from solid aluminium to make them as light as  possible, requiring innovative milling processes. Both are adorned with hand-applied Super-LumiNova, so that when darkness falls, the luminous gaze of the snake’s eyes  persists.

The mechanical reptile’s brain is symbolised by the technically challenging, oversized 14mm flying balance wheel with four traditional regulating screws, beating at the  traditional rate of 2.5Hz (18,000bph). It is firmly held in place thanks to a three-dimensional balance bridge bearing the two partners’ names. Separate crowns are  actuated for winding and time-setting, incorporated in the rear lugs of the Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti.

Flipping the Machine over reveals the power reserve indicator, along with some of the other 310 components of the hand-finished movement. MB&F is one of the few  remaining brands to uphold artisanal manufacturing processes and to finish components by hand; an approach only possible when crafting a very limited number of watches per year (just under 400 in 2024). The watchmakers at MB&F can only craft and assemble six to eight Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti movements per month; the 99  pieces will require over a year to deliver.

Watchmaking experts who have been following MB&F will recognise some of the unconventional features of the movement. These are the result of expertise patiently  developed across the more than 20 calibres created by MB&F since 2005 – in particular the manual-winding HM10 movement, although significant modifications were required to serve the sleek new Serpenti design.

AUTOMOTIVE TOUCHES

In addition to its obvious Serpenti origins, this unique new series reveals another source of inspiration for its two creators. Both Fabrizio and Max are car design  enthusiasts and grew up with the same automotive references. Initially, there was no plan to incorporate automobile design codes into the Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti, but there is no denying the influence that has seeped into this new creation: a case that resembles sleek automotive bodywork, a complex “stepped” sapphire crystal shaped like the flaps on the rear window of a sports car, crowns that could easily be mistaken for car wheels… The apparent portion of the movement also includes car engine-like components, including a grille with the famous hexagonal scale motif seen on previous Serpenti creations.

THREE LIMITED EDITIONS

There are three different versions to choose from, each limited to only 33 pieces. The first comes in a grade 5 titanium case with blue hour and minute domes. The second is housed in an 18K rose gold case and features piercing green eyes, and a third version is crafted from black PVD-coated stainless steel and comes alive with vibrant red eyes.

“This piece was a pleasure to design, but technically very challenging to produce,” says Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. “The aim was to have a totally different vision. The snake is a magnificent object that appeals to many collectors. I think we succeeded in giving the Bvlgari serpent a new horizon. It is not just a feminine object linked to the brand’s DNA but, for the first time, a technical object that speaks to the Bvlgari aesthetic and showcases MB&F’s expertise. Like all good collaborations, it is a win-win project.”

MB&F and Bvlgari have come together to create a unique and groundbreaking snake that is sure to captivate watch collectors: with its striking design and innovative mechanical engineering, the Bvlgari x MB&F Serpenti invites those who have long admired this mesmerizing creature from afar to finally embrace its power.

The melody of time

With dazzling suppleness, the double-coil Serpenti Pallini wraps around the wrist with a gentle embrace. Its scales are composed of countless small gold beads or brilliant-cut diamonds, each individually set on a gold mesh, using a technique derived from the ‘en tremblant’ method developed in 18th century Paris.

The Piccolissimo’s extraordinary mechanics only enhance the charms of Serpenti Pallini, creating multiple ways to wear it. Easily removable, the calibre can also be rotated by half a turn to adapting the dial’s reading direction for the precious dial – with a diamond-set bezel or fully paved with diamonds. The Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon and Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon reinvent Bvlgari’s soundscapes. The musicality of these chiming watches is based on a new musical interval that challenges the canon: the tritone harmonic interval. Repertoire

Bvlgari’s expertise in horological acoustics is unmatched. The brand stands alone in consistently producing all three types of chiming wristwatches in series, and its comprehensive repertoire is built on the exceptional skills of expert watchmakers in this rarefied domain. With a minute repeater on two tones, a carillon on three, and a grande and petite sonnerie on four tones, the Bvlgari Manufacture in Le Sentier masters the gamut of chiming horological instruments. In grande sonnerie mode, the BVV 800 calibre of the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon automatically chimes the hours and quarters as they pass and repeats the hour every hour. It can also repeat the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. As a grande sonnerie, it chimes the quarters with its four gongs and hammers.

The Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes, striking the quarters on three notes thanks to the modified BVL428 calibre carillon. In 2016, Bvlgari introduced the world’s thinnest minute repeater, which chimes on two notes with a record-setting movement thickness of just 3.12 mm. At the end of 2024, Bvlgari will be reissuing these three striking mechanisms, instruments of musical horology, in a recital of chamber music… for the wrist.

Tonality

The theme of this new opus is the tritone, an interval with a notorious role in music history, also known as the augmented fourth or the diminished fifth. This creative and disruptive take on the tonal scale is the result of the collaboration between Bvlgari and conductor Lorenzo Viotti. At just 34 years old, this Lausanne native currently leads the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Dutch National Opera. “The tritone, often referred to as the ‘Devil’s Interval,’ spans six semitones or three whole tones,” explains Lorenzo Viotti. “It divides the octave in half and brings dissonance and tension.”

While everything in the design of the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon and Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon is harmonious and composed with careful symmetry, their distinctive soundscape creates an intriguing aural contrast. “The purpose of this combination of notes is primarily the dissonance, the tension created by the tritone,” explains Lorenzo Viotti. “It strongly contrasts with the modern preference for consonant harmonic intervals. In medieval symbolism, certain chords were linked to spiritual concepts. The tritone was considered disturbing, and due to its asymmetry, contrary to the religious canon of reflecting divine harmony – hence the nickname associating it with the devil’s workings.”

Disruptive Harmony

The tritone introduces a disruption in the musical phrase, a dramatic tension embraced by countless composers from Gesualdo to John Coltrane, from Stravinsky to Metallica. Breaking with the classical consensus of horological musicality, Bvlgari invents a new register with the technical and artistic collaboration of a musical prodigy. Even the four notes of its Grande Sonnerie, previously set to the Big Ben chime, eschew the sacrosanct Westminster tones. Its quarter-hour chimes are sounded on four unfamiliar, intriguing, and unique notes. As a way of prompting the wearer to pay attention and count the strikes, the dissonant tritone sound creates an alertness that perfectly aligns with the nature of a watch that tells time audibly.

Just as violins and pianos have long transcended their wooden origins to incorporate more technical and radical materials, Bvlgari has taken its chiming watches into new material realms. The Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon is crafted from titanium, the Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon from rose gold, and the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater from multi-layered CTP (Carbon Thin Ply), which is both ultra-lightweight and rigid. In 1998, the Bvlgari Aluminium made a bold statement with its unprecedented combination of materials and a graphic, contrasting design that featured black counters on an off-white dial. In 2020, Bvlgari reissued this  emblematic watch, faithful to its unique blend of avant-garde materials and a design that remains as relevant and contemporary as ever. The materials align with the highest technological standards, featuring aluminum alloy  6082, also used in aerospace, and FKM rubber, renowned for its durability in watchmaking.

In 2021, the Bvlgari design studio enhanced the Bvlgari Aluminium with a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function, adding a new dimension for travelers. Consider the significance of a 1.70 mm thickness – a ninth world record that introduces a novel standard in watchmaking. This new Octo Finissimo Ultra is not only the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced: it is also the world’s thinnest COSC chronometer. This milestone reflects a rigorous process, underscored by a commitment to reevaluate, and transcend the conventions of traditional high watchmaking, propelling venerable craftsmanship into a contemporary context. The outcome is notable; the unparalleled design of watch becomes evident upon first glance, prompting reflection on the innovation behind its creation. How is this even possible?

The journey to this record was formidable, beginning with the task of reconciling extreme slimness with robustness. Creating the world’s thinnest mechanical watch isn’t possible by building solely on existing concepts. It requires a paradigm shift, starting anew from the ground up.

This is precisely what Bvlgari accomplished with the unveiling of the Octo Finissimo Ultra and its remarkable thickness of only 1.80 mm in 2022. Emboldened by this achievement and convinced the limits had not been reached, Bvlgari’s R&D department, in collaboration with Concepto (experts in complex mechanisms), decided to push the envelope further still. Like a sprinter achieving a new personal best, each fraction of improvement demanded exponential effort. Surpassing already historic achievements is a testament to the power of innovation, determination, and the ability to question established norms.

The art of Mastery

Given that the limits of movement slimness had already been reached with the Octo Finissimo Ultra, achieving an even slimmer profile for the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC involved a rework of the case by optimizing the sapphire crystal. Through patient, meticulous incremental steps, the engineers were able to shave off that critical tenth of a millimeter – and establish a new world record.

In terms of the overall structure, the case back serves as the mainplate, upon which the 170 components of the manually wound BVL180 manufacture caliber are assembled. These components are selected using 1/10-micron optical measuring systems, so as to be able to select the parts that are closest to the perfect dimension, in order to exceed the precision of production resources. This COSC-certified mechanical movement introduces another layer of complexity and marks a first for the Ultra line.

The challenge of ensuring adequate rigidity for a watch measuring 40 mm in diameter and just 1.70 mm thick was met by crafting case back/mainplate from particularly dense, hard and ultra-resistant tungsten carbide.

Moreover, to maximize the use of the watch’s surface area, the hour and minute dials, the large barrel – with a 50-hour power reserve – and the escapement cleverly play with the circular geometry of the bezel opening, adjusting it ever so slightly.

Two years ago, the Octo Finissimo Ultra, which is still available by special order, opened contemporary haute horlogerie to new connected worlds. The QR code on the ratchet has now been transformed into a miniaturized Datamatrix on the back, it provides all the data relating to the watch and invites you on a personal journey into the Bvlgari universe. With images and videos, it provides a better understanding of the quest for ultimate finesse, the special skills and ingenuity that went into the creation of the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC.

An exceptional watch needs an exceptional case: with the case dedicated to the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC, Bvlgari reinvents the experience of setting and winding its watch. If you don’t want to use traditional methods, you can place your watch in the dedicated case, equipped with a digital display. The desired time is then programmed, and the adjustment cycle launched at the touch of a button. In a matter of seconds, the watch is perfectly adjusted and wound with impeccable precision. The aesthetic hallmark of the Finissimo collection lies in its use of ultra-light titanium for the case, dial, and bracelet, a choice that has contributed to the line’s record-setting slimness and over 50 international awards in twelve years.
Following the debut of the first Octo Finissimo Ultra model in titanium in 2022, Bvlgari elevated the challenge by opting for platinum – a material notoriously difficult to work with due to its density and the precision required at such thin dimensions.

Consequently, the new Octo Finissimo Ultra Platinum is crafted in 950 platinum with satin, polished and sand-blasted finishes for the case middle and bezel, while the back/plate element is in tungsten carbide. The bracelet is also in platinum with a satin-polished finish. The integrated clasp is made of titanium to guarantee greater reliability (tested to 5000 cycles). Last but not least, this new model, equipped with the BVL 180 manufacture caliber, is a remarkable 1.80 mm thin, a first for a platinum watch.

While Tadao Ando and Bvlgari have collaborated in the past, this is the first time around Serpenti. In 2020 and 2021, the simple designs of the Octo Finissimo captured the essence of time through the pure lines of a spiral and the Mikazuki concept, symbolizing the waxing crescent moon.

Here, the artistic and conceptual journey shared by the architect and the Roman Maison around the theme of time enters a new realm, expressed in four limited editions within the hallmark Serpenti collection. “Tadao Ando possesses a rare creativity, inspired by nature and its transient character,” appreciates Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Executive Director of Product Creation.

Ando himself notes, “I aim to integrate the various forces at play, to restore the unity of architecture with nature.” His designs blend the aesthetics of perception and principles of circularity in harmony with natural light, establishing a direct connection with the environment. The Japanese architect’s emblematic creations are built around natural light, interacting with his refined lines. In spring, the openings let in invigorating sunlight into the interior spaces. Then the museum slips into its summer clothes, all in the light and shade, thanks to the coolness of the interior corridors.

Consequently, Serpenti now more profoundly reflects the realms of fauna, flora, and aesthetics than before, mirroring the forest and adapting with the seasons’ cycles. The reptile coils around the wrist, adorned with fragments of gemstones or mother of pearl that echo Tadao Ando’s architectural vision with their harmonious, straight, and raw lines.

Serpenti across the seasons

To evoke the seasons, Tadao Ando envisioned colorful marquetry – of green aventurine, tiger’s eye, and pink or white mother of pearl. Bvlgari’s artisan-craftspeople skillfully translated this vision onto a watch dial. They began by meticulously selecting the most visually striking fragments of each material. Each piece was then precisely traced and cut. Finally, the fragments were carefully fitted and assembled, creating a play of colors and reflections with organic expressiveness. Highlighting this artistic arrangement, two rows of diamonds set along the serpent’s head bring radiant life to this vibrant tableau.

The first of the four limited editions, to be unveiled at the summer solstice, natsu1 , captures the lush intensity of a sun-drenched forest, with the vivacity of slightly translucent green aventurine stone, enriched with dusky effects. This striking dial contrasts beautifully against a case and bracelet made of yellow gold and steel.

As autumn, aki2 , approaches, the leaves seem to ignite. Here, the tiger’s eye lends the iconic reptile a warm, golden glow, set entirely in rose gold and accented with a pink rubellite on the crown. With the onset of winter, fuyu 3 , nature’s icy beauty is revealed, symbolized by marquetry of white mother of pearl. Its iridescence is beautifully complemented by a gleaming steel case and bracelet.

Spring, haru 4, heralds the rebirth of vital energies, a time celebrated in Japan with the fleeting bloom of sakura, the cherry blossom trees – a vision encapsulated in this limited Serpenti watch edition by delicate shades of pink mother of pearl marquetry.

These new additions to the Serpenti Tubogas collection will mark the seasons through to spring 2025. Each limited edition is encased in a box specially crafted and signed by Tadao Ando, a detail echoed on the back of each watch case. Moreover, a collection of twenty exclusive boxed sets will present these four creations as an ensemble.

Since the collection’s inception, the Octo Finissimo has held a unique position in modern watchmaking. The saga begins in 2014, with the world’s slimmest tourbillon watch. Sketching a mirror effect

Esquisse, from the Italian “schizzo”: sketch. It has been used throughout the history of art, particularly since the Italian Renaissance, in painting, sculpture and architecture. Why is this so? Because, from the Renaissance onwards, Italian artists kept their Schizzi preciously for their students, for their archives and to improve the final piece. Sketches were, at the time, deeply associated with the discoveries of their time (such as anatomy or perspective).

Bulgari has naturally contributed to this cultural tradition for 140 years, perpetuating its spirit both in the technical mastery of hand-drawing and in the technology-assisted development of new calibers, for example.

The sketch thus reveals the soul of a watch, just as its movement will become its mechanical soul. Hence the brilliant intuition of the Bulgari creative studio: to fuse the sketch and the back of the movement, art and technique, on the dial.

Octo Finissimo Automatic Sketch: Minimalism, revisited.

The inaugural Octo Finissimo Automatic Sketch series will be available in two limited editions –280 pieces in steel and 70 in rose gold. Here, the ‘dial’ uniquely showcases the watch’s micro-rotor, escapement, bridges, rubies, and intricate finishing details (such as Côtes de Genève, circular graining). In other words, the intimate mechanics sketched by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. With lively, natural, and spontaneous strokes, it emphasizes the key features of the Finissimo icon, blending technical mastery with artistic expression.

Each series, whether in rose gold or steel, expresses a distinct sensibility. The 18K 5N rose gold version unfolds in monochrome splendor, from its polished and satin-finished case and bracelet to its captivating dial. This radiant piece subtly incorporates shades of gray on its hands and on the sketch, enhancing its elegance. The dial, akin to a blank canvas, allows the sketch to unfold without boundaries.

The steel version, monochromatic as well, presents a more modern and urban look. Here, shades of gray are the dominant: off-white for the sketch background; carbon as if drawn by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani’s pencil; charcoal for the hands; and, of course, steel for the case and bracelet. The interplay of polished and satin finishes, along with the characteristic sunburst-brushed bezel, gives the piece a unique brilliance that captures the transitional light at dusk.

Each piece measures 40 mm in diameter and 6.4 mm in slimness, powered by the in-house BVL 138 caliber (2.3 mm in height, automatic, with a 60-hour power reserve). The sapphire case back is uniquely etched with “EDIZIONE LIMITATA” and “1884 – 2024” to commemorate Bulgari’s 140th anniversary, making each watch not just a timepiece but a celebration of heritage and craftsmanship.

Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Sketch: The Art in the Mechanics of Time

The Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Sketch continues the innovative approach, featuring a 43 mm polished steel case with a slimness of 8.75 mm to elegantly house its GMT chronograph complications. The automatic manufacture movement with a peripheral oscillating weight provides a 55-hour power reserve. This design, pivotal for the watch’s record-breaking thinness in 2019, incorporates a caliber measuring a mere 3.3 mm in height that not only includes a 30-minute chronograph and central second but also displays a second time zone at 3 o’clock.

Limited to just 140 pieces, this edition showcases a sketch featuring key elements of the dial and the back of the movement. Skillfully blending the iconic Tri-Compax chronograph display (GMT at 3 o’clock, 30-minute counter at 6 o’clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock) with a balance represented between 4 and 5 o’clock, the emblematic column wheel at 8 o’clock, and exquisite finishing details on the bridges and gears. The open caseback reveals the original BVL 318 caliber with the special markings “EDIZIONE LIMITATA” and Bulgari’s anniversary, “1884 – 2024.”

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Lucea, crafted in either the radiance of steel or the warmth of gold, exudes a gentle glow. Bulgari has meticulously refined its case and reimagined the bracelet’s design, embracing symmetrical curves for an enduring elegance. “Our rich heritage in jewelry craftsmanship and design has been our compass in re-envisioning the Lucea bracelet. It’s infused with a lightness reminiscent of Bulgari’s classic jewels, a sensuality akin to that exuded by our iconic Serpenti collection, and a flexibility evoking the fluid links of Octo Finissimo,” states Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Product Creation Executive Director. The bracelet’s V-links have been softened and rounded, enhancing their geometry while retaining their distinctive character. Alternating with polished central elements in either rose gold or steel, the bracelet gracefully wraps around the wrist, culminating in a sleek folding clasp.

Rays of mother-of-pearl

Crafted in either rose gold, lavishly set with diamonds, or in sleek steel, the elegantly slimmed-down, polished bezel frames a captivating dial, either in mother-of-pearl Intarsio or malachite marquetry. The signature Intarsio technique extols light, showcasing the organic iridescence of mother-of-pearl, a precious treasure of the seas, and adds a refreshing take on the sunray finish of watch dials. Artisans assemble ‘rays’ of finely cut mother-of-pearl – a task demanding the highest precision given the material’s brittleness – to create a sunburst pattern with three-dimensional pleating. In white or green mother-of-pearl, depending on the version, this shimmer born of nature itself enhances Lucea’s radiant allure.

Intense malachite

The green malachite marquetry on Lucea’s dial captures the sixties’ fascination with colored stones. This distinct tableau is composed of small pieces of the mineral that might have been overlooked but, here, are transformed into something beautiful through the art of upcycling. Skilled artisans at the Bulgari Manufacture in Switzerland carefully select each fragment for the vibrancy of its hue and the expressiveness of its grain. Meticulously cut and hand-assembled, every piece contributes to this special creation, rendering each Lucea a unique masterpiece.

Twelve brilliant-cut diamonds, claw-set in square, architecturally inspired settings, sparkle as hour markers on these remarkable dials, their angular shape contrasting with the gems’ roundness. Another diamond adorns the V-shaped crown, itself topped with a cabochon-cut synthetic sapphire, mirroring the dial’s design. One subtly opulent iteration of Lucea dazzles with a diamond-set bezel for total of 56 gems and 1.3 carats on the case and dial.

The latest Lucea models showcase the passage of time with a choice of two case diameters. The 33 mm version with a thickness of 9.16 mm is driven by a self-winding mechanical caliber with a 42-hour power reserve. Alternatively, the 28 mm version comes equipped with a quartz movement, allowing for a thickness of just 7.72 mm. For other versions, the brilliance of the bezel, in whether in steel or rose gold, is harmoniously paired with a metallic bracelet. These entrancing creations, straddling the line between watches and jewelry, “express the essence of our jeweler’s soul,” as Jean-Christophe Babin reflects, “because Bulgari’s heritage is rooted in the art of bringing gold and precious stones together, with extreme precision, to create exceptional pieces.”
