This captivating model has been hotly anticipated by Moonwatch fans since November 2023, when the very first edition was spotted on the wrist of OMEGA brand ambassador, Daniel Craig, at the Planet OMEGA Exhibition in New York. Now, the design is finally and officially revealed, and will be available for public sale.

The watch’s most distinctive feature is its rare white dial. When the original Speedmaster was first created in 1957, one of the main goals of the designers was to produce an easy-to-read display with superb legibility. Hence, the white hands and indexes on a black dial. On this new version, the opposite colourway has the same result. Not only has OMEGA produced this new dial in white with black detailing and new applied indexes, but the designers have also added a stand-out Speedmaster name in red, and given the entire surface a glossy lacquered finish – the first time this technique has ever been used on the Moonwatch’s step dial.

Why white? The primary inspiration for this new look is the white and black colours of astronaut spacesuits – especially those used during extravehicular activity (EVA), such as spacewalks. An authentic connection after all, as the Speedmaster Moonwatch has been officially worn by NASA astronauts since 1965 and is known as the first watch worn on the Moon. In addition, red lines have also featured on the suits since Apollo 13 in 1970 to signify the commander’s rank.

There’s also another special reason to go white. In 1969, OMEGA created the ALASKA I prototype as part of their secret NASA project to design the perfect space watch. After months of experiments, OMEGA chose a white dial because it provides a particularly effective thermal reflection coefficient. The red Speedmaster name on the new model is also a nod to the protective red case that surrounded the original ALASKA I watch.

Beyond the white dial, OMEGA has even more to reveal in the watch’s craft. The 42 mm stainless steel timepiece is presented on a comfortable and vintage-inspired stainless steel bracelet with five arched links per row. A classic look with polished and brushed detailing. Two more versions are also available, including one on a black micro-perforated leather strap with red and white stitching, and another on an anti-bacterial rubber strap with a moon surface pattern in positive relief on the underside for increased comfort and aesthetics.

For Moonwatch fans, the black anodized aluminium bezel of each timepiece has been given a famous “Dot over Ninety” on the tachymeter scale, while inside, the watch is driven by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 – the most up-to-date version of the legendary Calibre 321 that was trusted by astronauts on the moon.

This time, the meteorite dial has been enhanced by a PVD Moonshine™ Gold colour treatment, delivering an astonishing radiance that is complemented by diamond hour markers and a diamond-paved bezel.

28 mm selection: Including a model in stainless steel and 18K Sedna™ Gold. The meteorite dial has been given an icy blue colour treatment and diamond hour markers, while a stamped Constellation Observatory medallion features on the caseback.

25 mm selection: Including a bi-colour model in stainless steel and 18K Sedna™ Gold. Along with a Constellation Observatory medallion on the caseback, diamonds have been used for the bezel and hour markers, while the meteorite dial has been given a lilac colour treatment.

At OMEGA, the first Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 timepiece was released in 2018, marking the 50th anniversary of the mission. This time, the brand has returned to its watchmaking launchpad, elevating the same design with an even finer level of detailing and refinement.

Creating a unique aesthetic throughout the design, the watch’s Calibre 3869 features a laser-ablated Moon relief on the blackened main plate and bridges. Just like the Moon, this movement reveals two different sides. The dial-side represents our view of the lunar surface, as seen from Earth, while the back of the watch shows the dark side that only astronauts get to see. This new update has enhanced the Moon’s definition, thanks to laser engraving and contrasting surfaces. The features are clearly pronounced and sit beautifully alongside the light grey coated wheels and dark grey gold coated balance wheel.

Furthermore, the manual-winding Calibre 3869 has achieved the Co-Axial Master Chronometer standard, providing customers with the Swiss industry’s highest level of precision, chronometric performance, and magnetic resistance.

The Moon-decorated movement can be seen through the watch’s skeletonized dial, which is crafted from black anodized aluminium. Yet the journey doesn’t end there. When creating the 44.25 mm case, the polished bezel, and the caseback, OMEGA used separate pieces of black ceramic – while also filling the tachymeter scale with bright white “Grand Feu” enamel.

The central chronograph seconds hand is varnished yellow, a colour theme that continues on the watch’s perforated strap – which is made from black rubber with a yellow interior.

Another new touch is the patent pending small-seconds hand at 9 o’clock. This has been engineered from Grade 5 Titanium and shaped like NASA’s famous Saturn V rocket. The powerful 3D structure has been obtained by laser turning, while the colours are achieved with white varnish, ablation, and laser blackening. A small yet inspiring detail that celebrates the success of the Apollo program.

On the caseback, a series of engravings has been inscribed, including “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE” – the final words spoken to ground control by Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, just before the Apollo 8 mission disappeared to the far side of the Moon, and out of radio contact, for the very first time.

The Moon’s distant surface has always been a source of mystery and curiosity. To wear this watch is to make an authentic connection with our lunar neighbour, as well as OMEGA’s own connection to space exploration. As the world now looks further ahead to the possibilities of the future, the Apollo 8 mission stands as a reminder of what shared human power can achieve.
