Experts in the design of complex calibres, Girard-Perregaux’s master-watchmakers have achieved a technical feat by combining two grand complications and a new self-winding system featuring a micro-rotor in a movement measuring 43.55 mm in diameter and 10.75 mm thick.

Skilfully openworked to ensure maximum transparency, Calibre GP9530 offers a modern interpretation of the Three Bridges architecture, the brand’s iconic signature since the mid-1800s. In this contemporary version, the historical aesthetic has been reinterpreted with the third bridge positioned at the rear of the movement.

CHIMING WATCHES EMBEDDED IN THE GIRARD-PERREGAUX DNA

“Listening” to the time is an ancient custom. At the end of the 18th century, the bell attached to the back of pocket watches to chime the hours and quarters was replaced by a new device consisting of a gong wrapped around the movement and a hammer – the principle upon which today’s minute repeaters are still based.

A pioneering watchmaker curious to explore the possibilities offered by the inventions of his era, Jean-François Bautte (1772-1837) began working from an early stage on the development of chiming mechanisms that repeated the hours and quarters on demand. The precocious and remarkably talented young Geneva watchmaker also trained in engraving, jewellery and goldsmithing.

Passionate about mechanics and an artist at heart, he was fascinated by the exploration of automatons, skilfully combining watchmaking, jewellery and artistic crafts to create music boxes, singing birds and other fabulous objects that enchanted a wealthy and international clientele. Bautte was not only one of the most renowned watchmakers of the era, but also a visionary entrepreneur. At a time when the custom was to outsource work using the établissage system involving separate artisans working on various parts of the watch, he chose to bring all the watchmaking trades under one roof to control the entire production process – from design to assembly and decoration, thus inventing the concept of an integrated Manufacture.

Building on this heritage and faithful to this vision, Manufacture Girard-Perregaux has continued to perfect and refine its creations with the development of minute repeaters and chimes (cathedral and carillon) combining different tones. The level of mastery achieved in this field by Constant Girard-Perregaux and his son Constant Girard-Gallet during the 19th century gave rise to alarm watches, Grande Sonnerie models and a number of timepieces combining minute repeaters with complications such as chronographs or complete calendars with moon-phase displays.

In 1996, Girard-Perregaux combined a minute repeater and tourbillon for the first time in a wristwatch, a grand complication that has also been part of the brand’s DNA since its inception. The miniaturised 20th-century minute repeater could now be worn on the wrist in a water-resistant case, whose small size called for new developments in acoustics. Equipped with a Westminster chime reproducing the carillon’s four-note melody (G, D, E and C), the Opera I and II collections require expertise and know-how possessed by only the great movement Manufactures. The extremely complex movement must be assembled, tested, adjusted and reassembled multiple times without damaging the components.

– technically and aesthetically — to bring it into the modern era.
Each timepiece represents the encounter between centuries-old heritage and contemporary engineering.

Its development was guided by a determination to achieve pure tone, effective vibration propagation and optimal case acoustics while eliminating unwanted noise.
The plate and bridges are made of titanium, a light, rigid material that facilitates the propagation of vibrations throughout the movement. The mainplate itself has been secured to the case to ensure that these vibrations are transmitted – without any loss – from the movement to the rose gold case of the Flying Bridges Minute Repeater.

Acoustic performance lies at the heart of the development of Calibre GP9530, a masterpiece of watchmaking architecture

A domed sapphire crystal on either side of the case amplifies the crystal-clear melody produced by the hammers striking the gongs on the dial side. To avoid any noise or interference that might be detrimental to sound purity, the gongs and the gong stud are made from a single piece of metal and the centrifugal strikework regulator has been moved to the back of the movement. Finally, the jewel-fitted white gold micro-rotor of the new self-winding system oscillates in complete silence.

The openworking of the calibre is both an aesthetic and functional choice. While revealing the movement’s delicate inner workings, its airy structure also ensures optimal resonance. The sound is almost entirely unimpeded as it reverberates inside the case.
The case has been equipped with an innovative arrow-shaped slide-piece system seamlessly integrated into the new monobloc case-middle. This technical innovation results in enhanced reliability and unique water resistance to 30 metres.

WHEN HERITAGE MEETS THE HERE AND NOW

Manufacture known for its movement-making excellence, Girard-Perregaux has also established itself in the realm of design since the 19th century. The revolutionary, now iconic, La Esmeralda and its Three Gold Bridges revealed and magnified functional elements to create an unmistakable visual signature in the mid-1800s. Since then, the conceptualisation of a movement and its aesthetics have formed a cohesive whole within which form and function are inseparable. The balance, symmetry and refinement devoted to the decoration of each component are part of a heritage that has been passed down throughout the history of Girard-Perregaux.
Crafted in pink gold, the three stylised Flying Bridges (the third is at the rear of the movement) support an exceptionally elegant, airy structure in which the chiming mechanism and tourbillon appear to be levitating. The same demand for balance prevails on the caseback, where the new self-winding system mirrors the barrel to ensure perfect symmetry.

To honour the watchmaker who crafted this outstanding timepiece, a small plate bearing this artisan’s initials has been subtly incorporated into the skeletonised calibre as a discreet signature of the work accomplished. No less than 1,340 hand-polished chamfers (including 295 interior angles) make light an essential component of the GP9530 calibre’s
design.

Adopted by Girard-Perregaux since the 19th century, the lyre-shaped tourbillon cage acts as a small seconds dial with its own small hand. Like the Three Bridges and their arrow-shaped ends – picked up on the hammers and springs of the Minute Repeater, on the oscillating weight of the winding system and on the new slide-piece serving to activate the chime – it embodies a living heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation within the Manufacture.

The 41 mm case, just  10.85 mm thick (11.25 mm for the diamond-set version), strikes a perfect balance between presence and elegance offering an optimal fit on the wrist — a testament to GirardPerregaux’s mastery of  proportions, even in a tourbillon timepiece. The edge of the octagonal white-gold bezel now features a newly defined polished bevel contrasting with a circular satin finish, creating a dynamic play  of shapes that unites the octagon and circle — the essence of the Laureato.

The reworked case displays sharper lines, deeper bevels, and broader polished facets that catch light from every angle. WHEN DIAMONDS TAKE THE STAGE

The jewel like quality of the Laureato Three Gold Bridges is clear to see. However, for watch aficionados seeking the ultimate in brilliance, Girard-Perregaux offers a version of the watch set with 32  baguette cut diamonds (~3.2 carats).

Drawing on the talents of a master gem-setter, the baguette-cut diamonds must be precisely set within a custom-made bezel. The stones are placed within a channel that is designed to  accommodate the subtle variations in the size and shape of each diamond. The master gem-setter ensures all stones are aligned and presented at the same height.

The bezel’s height is optimised to enhance the brilliance of each diamond while contributing to the harmonious appearance of the composition.

The intricate setting is further refined for the Laureato’s octagonal bezel, subtly widening towards each corner to fit the various sizes of stones. Secured using an invisible setting technique, the baguette-cut diamonds are renowned for their remarkable proportions and extraordinary play with light. Here again, light is not simply an element of design — it is a material, shaping emotion,  depth, and radiance.

Over time, the Manufacture has never ceased in its pursuit of innovation. In 1965, it unveiled the first High Frequency Movement. Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, this breakthrough represented a major leap in precision and reliability, perfectly embodying Girard-Perregaux’s mechanical ingenuity. is unveiling its brand new movement, the calibre GP4800. Entirely developed in-house, it represents a clean-slate approach, free of technical constraints and creative compromise. A movement that encapsulates the enduring ethos of the brand: design and performance, innovation and heritage, all united in perfect harmony.

A MOVEMENT FOR NOW AND THE FUTURE

The Calibre GP4800 plays host to an array of technical refinements

Recognising the growing interest for smaller case sizes, the Maison has sought to create a compact movement. The Calibre GP4800 measures 25.60 mm (111/2’’’) in diameter with a thickness of 4.28 mm. Furthermore, its design allows the Manufacture to potentially combine the base movement with additional complications in the future. However, despite being compact, the Calibre GP4800 plays host to an array of technical refinements that collectively deliver precision, reliability and beauty.

A SILICIUM ESCAPEMENT AND A STOP SECONDS FUNCTION

The GP4800 is fitted with a silicium escapement, featuring an escape wheel, pallet lever and roller, all crafted from the lightweight material. Silicium is exceptionally

A VARIABLE- INERTIA BALANCE

he GP4800 features a superior variable- inertia balance. With most watches, the rate is adjusted using a ‘raquette’. This device alters the effective length of the balance spring, making the watch run faster or slower. With the new variable-inertia balance, the length of the balance spring is fixed and the rate is altered by adjusting four white gold timing screws mounted on the rim of the balance wheel, ensuring that the rate can be set more precisely.

A powerful barrel plays host to the mainspring that delivers significant torque. The balance wheel has an inertia of 8 mg per cm which, smooth, non-magnetic and highly  resistant to wear, attributes that make it ideal for precision watchmaking. Moreover, the hardness of silicium, its low coefficient of friction and its resistance to wear  significantly enhance the reliability and longevity of the mechanism. These components are also optimally shaped to maximise efficiency and chronometric performance. In addition, the GP4800 is equipped with a stop-seconds function allowing the wearer to set the time precisely.

The GP4800 features a superior variable-inertia balance together with the variable-inertia balance, mitigates the influence of shocks. Moreover, the increased torque confers better stability, thereby enhancing precision.

Collectively, these enhancements ensure the GP4800 delivers a minimum power reserve of 55 hours. This level of autonomy represents a significant improvement and reflects the Manufacture’s commitment to both technical progress and user convenience. From the barrel to the regulating organ, all parts of the movement have been optimised to deliver performance.

AN IMPROVED WINDING SYSTEM
The Calibre GP4800 incorporates an upgraded winding system and features an oscillating mass mounted on a ball bearing. The ball bearing is set with ceramic balls and equipped with a shock absorber system that reduces winding noise and counters shocks, delivering long-term durability. The motion of the rotor is transmitted to a ball-bearing clutch system, which winds the mainspring barrel in a unidirectional manner.

BEAUTIFUL TO BEHOLD

The design of the movement is contemporary but includes details inspired by the Maison’s rich heritage. Beneath the skeletonised 18K gold oscillating mass sit three  bridges, inspired by the pocket watch of 1867, one of the oldest brand signatures in watchmaking. Comprising the balance bridge, gear train bridge and barrel bridge, these metal plates are not only functional but also beautiful. Symmetry was the guiding principle behind the creation of this movement — a philosophy beloved by Constant Girard.

The skeletonised balance bridge is affixed at two points, making it more stable. Furthermore, its openworked design allows a view of the balance wheel rotating back and forth, the balance spring beating with life and the silicium escapement in motion.

A SYMPHONY OF FINISHES. A TESTAMENT TO CRAFTSMANSHIP

With no fewer than ten distinct types of finishing visible on the Calibre GP4800, Girard-Perregaux reaffirms its unwavering commitment to excellence. Craftsmanship   encompasses not only what is seen, but also what remains hidden. This meticulous approach reflects a deep respect for traditional Haute Horlogerie, while embracing a  contemporary aesthetic.

The rhodium-plated bridges are engraved with golden inscriptions, including the eagle emblem. They are adorned with straight Côtes de Genève engraving, feature diamond-bevelled edges and incorporate mirror-polished screw heads. The visible areas of the mainplate feature a refined sandblasted texture, complemented by the words ‘SILICIUM ESCAPEMENT’ positioned near the balance. Even the hidden surfaces are not overlooked with circular graining adorning the underside of the mainplate, exemplifying the Maison’s dedication to detail. The oscillating weight incorporates polished arrow-shaped motifs, a tribute to the original bridges of 1867, while a combination of sandblasting, snailing, and traits tirés grace its flanks. Additional elements, such as the sunray-finished ball-bearing clutch, snailed barrel drum and circular satin- finished wheels, further underscore the blend of innovation and heritage.

This harmonious interplay of traditional and modern decoration techniques makes the Calibre GP4800 not only a mechanical achievement, but also a visual and emotional expression of the brand’s DNA.

The Laureato Skeleton Aston Martin Edition celebrates the dialogue between power and precision. Sculpted from black ceramic, its case reveals a dramatic openworked movement, where each bridge, edge, and hand-finished surface reflects a mastery of craft. This mechanical choreography — both exacting and elegant — mirrors the sculptural lines and technical sophistication of Aston Martin’s finest creations. The case and bracelet subscribe to the iconic design of the inaugural Laureato of 1975. Formed of ceramic — a material seven times harder than steel, lightweight, hypoallergenic, and resistant to scratches — both are enriched with polished and satin finishes. The octagonal bezel features circular satin finishing, while the case shows horizontal satin finishing. The bracelet is integrated, consistent with Laureato tradition.and technical sophistication of Aston Martin’s finest creations.

The Calibre GP01800

This movement, derived from the famous GP01800 caliber, is treated using a galvanic process (anthracite gray ruthenium) and worked like a metal net. It enables the eye to follow the movement of energy thanks to the rhodium-plated geartrain. During this journey of discovery into the heart of a mechanical labyrinth comprising 173 components, including 25 jewels, the eyes come to rest on the sweep seconds at 10 o’clock carried by the seconds wheel. They are then in turn captivated by the quick oscillations of the regulating organ featuring a large variable inertia balance pulsating at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).

To pay tribute to this timeless symbol of horological excellence, Girard-Perregaux proudly unveils the new Laureato 42 mm, featuring an ancestral savoir-faire, a  breathtaking grey Grand Feu enamel dial.

A DIAL THAT DEFIES TIME

At the heart of this new timepiece lies a dial of exceptional depth and brilliance. Bearing a refined bluish hue, it owes its beauty to the demanding Grand Feu enamel technique. Crafted in-house in the Sowind Group, to which Girard-Perregaux belongs, this artisanal process underscores Girard-Perregaux’s commitment to craftsmanship of the highest order.

The enamel is composed of a precise mixture of silica, minium, potash, and soda, finely ground into powder and combined with metal oxides to achieve its nuanced hue. Layered carefully onto the dial, it is then fired at around 800°C in a kiln—repeated five to ten times—to achieve its flawless, radiant surface. Due to the unpredictability of  this process, some of the dials are rejected as they feature slight imperfections. But those that survive emerge as enduring masterpieces—impervious to time, fading, or  aging.

Adding to the allure of its subtly bluish grey colour, a sunray flinqué motif lies beneath the translucent enamel layer, revealing both the dial’s brilliance and its sense of  depth. The choice naturally fell on enamel for this Laureato: a texture that gives the dial depth and subtle variations in colour. It is also a captivating material, selected to  eternally adorn this new timepiece, unchanging as time passes.

It owes its beauty to the demanding Grand Feu enamel technique.

AN IN-HOUSE DESIGN THAT HONORS ITS HERITAGE

While the dial captures attention, the rest of the timepiece remains true to the unmistakable Laureato design language. The distinctive octagonal bezel, set atop a circular  plinth and tonneau-shaped case, creates a harmonious play of shapes and light. Alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces enrich the steel case’s visual complexity.

Thanks to its slim profile and integrated bracelet, the Laureato is known for its exceptional comfort and timeless style. Rhodium-plated baton hands mark the hours and minutes, while the slender central seconds hand features a counterweight inspired by the iconic Girard-Perregaux Gold Bridge—a discreet tribute to the Maison’s  horological DNA. The date aperture at 3 o’clock is elegantly executed, with white numerals on a colour-matched disc, in perfect harmony with the dial.

Alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces enrich the steel case’s visual complexity.

PRECISION POWERED FROM WITHIN

Like the original model launched in 1975, the new Laureato 42 mm is driven by an in-house calibre, now the GP01800 automatic movement, entirely developed and  assembled at the Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Measuring just 3.97 mm thick, this selfwinding movement offers a power reserve of at least 54 hours.

Every detail of the calibre reflects Girard- Perregaux’s rigorous standards: a pink gold oscillating weight adorned with circular Côtes de Genève, straight Côtes de Genève  on the bridges, mirror-polished screws, beveled edges, circular graining on the main plate, and gilded engravings. These exceptional finishes are hallmarks of the high  watchmaking that has defined the brand’s reputation for more than 230 years.

While the “Space Race” was capturing the world’s imagination and Concorde was making its very first test flight, Verner Panton launched his iconic chair, moulded from a single piece of plastic.

Girard-Perregaux was no exception when it launched the Deep Diver, reference 9108.

The Deep Diver’s defining characteristics included a 14-facet bezel and a striking red dial, which made it instantly recognisable. Upon release, the Deep Diver quickly gained legendary status.

The design of the Deep Diver is as captivating as its engineering, boldly blending pop hues of blue, orange, and white. It features a date window and a rotating inner bezel, adjustable via the crown positioned at 2 o’clock.
The hands and markers are coated with a luminous material that glows bright blue in low light. The typography of the numerals is inspired by the retro-futuristic version seen on the original piece.

Grade 5 titanium, measures 40.30 mm by 38.00 mm, offering a perfect balance of elegance and everyday comfort. The crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock, inspired by the original model, add refinement and symmetry to its design.

This play on symmetry recalls the brand’s initial work on cases and bezels. With the release of the Deep Diver, Girard-Perregaux made a mark on horology with a bezel featuring 14 facets, a true precursor to the shape of the Laureato introduced in 1975. The dial is also enriched with era-specific Girard-Perregaux branding and subtle Bamford signatures, contributing to an aesthetic that is both authentic and contemporary.

Versatility is a hallmark of the new Deep Diver.

Thanks to an integrated quick-release system, the rubber strap can be changed easily and without tools. Each timepiece comes fitted with a blue rubber strap and includes an additional orange version, offering the wearer a vibrant alternative.

Building on the success of the iconic Laureato model, that burst onto the watch scene back in 1975, the Clou de Paris of the new UAE special edition showcases a charming Burgundy dial, the perfect color to match the collection’s versatile philosophy.

Laureato, a contemporary icon

In 1975, Girard-Perregaux released a groundbreaking watch equipped with what was considered at the time a cutting-edge movement, the aptly named ‘Quartz Chronometer’. Completely developed in-house from the beginning, as was its design, the model immediately proved popular, especially in style-conscious Italy, one of the Maison’s most important markets at the time.

Since 1975, the octagonal bezel sits atop a circular base which in turn rests upon a tonneau-shaped case. The elaborate profile of the case freely engages with light, courtesy of its many facets and angles, producing pockets of brilliance and shade. In this instance, the special edition is adorned with 56 diamonds of 4 different sizes (~0.90 carat in total), accentuating this extraordinary interplay with light and offering an additional touch of refinement and sparkle. The sparkling appearance of the diamonds is complemented by the polished central links of the integrated bracelet, heightening the model’s overall lustre.

Drawing inspiration from a regional art form

Drawing inspiration from the local culture, the launch of this special edition sheds light on the art of Henna, a craft that has transcended generations, just like the Laureato design. For the campaign, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons and Girard-Perregaux collaborated with Emirati artist, Dr. Azra Khamissa, on a customised Henna design inspired by the iconic octagonal shape of the Laureato.
Characterised by its deep and rich colour, the Henna design offers a bold interpretation of a classic geometrical shape, bringing it to life and highlighting the beauty of the art form in both the pattern and the know-how behind the timepiece.

Beauty on the outside

Housed in a 38mm steel case, the mid-size timepiece is endowed with a burgundy-coloured dial, enriched with a Clou de Paris motif. This sculptural pattern, composed of multiple pyramidal structures, imbues the dial with a three-dimensional appearance. The burgundy-coloured dial subtly plays with the light, becoming deeper or lighter depending on the angle.

Housed in a slender case, just 10.02mm in height, this special edition is equipped with an in-house self-winding movement, the Calibre GP03300. Visible via a see-through case-back, the movement is enriched with a plethora of refined details, perpetuating the Maison’s reputation for fine watches. The main plate is adorned with circular graining, while some components feature bevelling, mirror-polishing, satin finish, snailing, sunray finish and various engravings. The bridges are decorated with straight Côtes de Genève and the pink gold oscillating weight is embellished with circular Côtes de Genève. Lastly, the movement has a power reserve of at least 46 hours.

A new era in watchmaking

In 1971, Girard-Perregaux launched Switzerland’s first serially produced quartz watch. Its frequency of 32,768 Hz was set by the Manufacture and subsequently adopted as the universal standard for quartz watches. A battery within the watch transmitted an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, creating vibrations that would ultimately orchestrate the display of time. During this period, quartz was widely considered as the future owing to its notable precision.

A year or two later, LED displays emerged, with both computer and watch brands embracing what was considered at the time to be state-of-the-art technology. The hour and minute hands found on traditional mechanical watches were supplanted by bright red Arabic numerals, often brought to life with the press of a pusher. Interestingly, these early LED displays were often housed in a conventionally shaped round watch case and occupied only a small proportion of the dial area available.

Everything changed in 1976 when Girard-Perregaux unveiled a surprising new model that would later be known as the ‘Casquette’. Launched at a time when the world was obsessed with sci-fi blockbusters, the model’s futuristic looks and sharp design were aligned with the widespread public interest for spaceships and time travel. Its contemporary tubular display powered by an in-house quartz calibre and distinctive streamlined case seemed otherworldly and revolutionary. Like the Laureato, the name ‘Casquette’ was a soubriquet conceived by the watch collecting community and was officially adopted by the Maison.

The Casquette returns to the delight of GP lovers

Since its inception, Girard-Perregaux has continuously engaged with watch collectors, on some occasions making bespoke timepieces to satisfy an individual’s personal requirements. It is this approach that is deep-rooted in the brand’s philosophy; a mission to deliver joy through its timepieces, making the customer the focus of everything the Manufacture does. The company often meets collectors in person during events or Manufacture visits and actively engages with its community via social media channels.

In 2022, having received numerous requests from its community, Girard-Perregaux released a new Casquette, the aptly named Casquette 2.0. A revival of the collectors’ favourite from the 70s, closely resembling the original watch of 1976, the Casquette 2.0 incorporated some subtle changes and several useful enhancements. Housed in a black ceramic and titanium case, featuring titanium pushers, the model bore a strong resemblance to the Macrolon-clad original, the undisputed icon of the 70s. Widely considered the cool kids’ watch, the Casquette 2.0 proved a box office sensation.

Mindful of the widespread affection for the Casquette watch among GP’s community, the Manufacture has now created a new variant of the model. Born in 1976, the inaugural Casquette was offered in three case variants: Macrolon, gold plated and steel. This latest model is presented in a Grade 5 titanium case and features 18K 2N yellow gold GP logo and pushers, a nod to its gold plated and steel forbears of the 70s. Reborn in 2024, this latest iteration of the Casquette 2.0 comes supplied on a matching Grade 5 titanium bracelet with a rubber lining, conferring exceptional wearer comfort. The titanium buckle is equipped with a micro adjustment, allowing the wearer to fine tune the sizing of the bracelet to ensure a perfect fit. This latest reference will be the ultimate limited edition with a production run of 820 pieces and, as everyone knows ‘all good things must come to an end’.

The Casquette 2.0 is equipped with the Calibre GP03980, providing additional functions not found on the original model. Indeed, as well as displaying the hours, minutes, seconds, day and date, just like the original, the Casquette 2.0 with its vintage LED display also indicates the month, year, chronograph, second time zone and a secret date. Incidentally, the Calibre GP03980 can be retrofitted to the first generation models from 1976, sidestepping obsolescence and making the Casquette one of the oldest serviceable quartz watches around today. ELA and leukodystrophies

ELA was founded in 1992 by two men in a hospital corridor, Guy Alba and Pascal Prin. A unique charity watch

Girard-Perregaux has produced a unique charity watch for the event, a sublime expression of its famous Laureato model, first released in 1975. Presented in stainless steel, the case of the Laureato Eternity is endowed with a harmonious arrangement of different shapes. The octagonal bezel sits atop a circular plinth which in turn sits above a tonneau-shaped case. Moreover, the case juxtaposes brushed and polished surfaces, conferring an alluring aesthetic where the various case facets continuously flit between brilliance and shade.

Métiers d’Art

The dial is enriched with a guilloché motif, comprising fine concentric rings that emanate from the centre, forming a nuanced sunray pattern. Thereafter, the dial is suffused with a lustrous layer of violet-coloured Grand Feu enamel, crafted internally by Donzé Cadrans, a Sowind-owned company and pre-eminent maker of enamel dials.

Grand Feu enamel is highly prized by watch aficionados. The enamel is a mixture of silica, minium, potash and soda, all ground into a paste and then blended with metal oxides to form a powder. This mixture is subsequently dusted on the dial and then fired in an oven with an operating temperature of 800°C. The dial is removed when the desired shade is achieved. It is then allowed to cool before the process is repeated, typically 5 – 10 times. Many dials made using this traditional process fail to make the grade and are discarded; only those that are considered flawless are used. The vibrant violet dial featured on the Laureato Eternity will never fade and promises a lifetime of ownership delight.

Distinctively Laureato

Silver-toned hands and indexes enunciate the prevailing time while allowing the beauty of the dial to shine. The date is shown at 3 o’clock with white numerals set against a violet-coloured disc, matching the hue of the dial as horological etiquette dictates.

At the heart of the Laureato Eternity sits a Manufacture movement, the GP01800 calibre. Made at the company’s production facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the self-winding movement features a pink gold oscillating weight adorned with circular Côtes de Genève motif. Additional movement refinements include straight Côtes de Genève on the bridges, bevelling, mirror-polished screws, circular graining on the main plate and engraved gilded text, all executed to the company’s no-compromise standards.

A product of La Chaux-de-Fonds

Since the 19th century, Girard-Perregaux has been a continuous presence in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Swiss city was the birthplace of Constant Girard, the inventive watchmaker who later wed Marie Perregaux in 1854, a marriage of two names that has since become synonymous with Haute Horlogerie. While the blending of two surnames is not uncommon in this rarefied segment of the watch industry, Girard-Perregaux is the only firm to have a double-barrel name forged by love, not business.

La Chaux-de-Fonds is a city dedicated to watchmaking. The city’s tall buildings and the distinctive arrangement of streets are designed to optimise natural light, illuminating workshops where hand-eye coordination are of paramount importance. These characteristics form part of the terroir, imbuing each Girard-Perregaux timepiece with its distinctive character.

Framing the city are verdant vistas that assume warm golden tones on summer evenings. Moved by the beauty of this picturesque landscape, Girard-Perregaux has created an additional expression of its famous La Esmeralda Tourbillon ‘A Secret’ Eternity Edition, executed in rich honey-hued tones. L

While Girard-Perregaux is a Manufacture, making in-house movements, it does source components from local specialists, a tradition that harks back to the 18th century and the foundation of what has since become known as ‘the watchmaking town’. La Esmeralda Tourbillon ‘A Secret’ Eternity Edition, the Maison’s latest creation, is a collaborative effort drawing on the skills and expertise of local specialists. Indeed, 99% of the components that form this watch originate from La Chaux-de-Fonds.

La Esmeralda – a legendary chronometer

Unwavering in his quest for chronometric excellence, Constant Girard created several highly precise pocket watches. His achievements in this field led to his timepieces winning numerous prizes. In 1889, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, Constant unveiled La Esmeralda, an exceptional pocket watch that was awarded a gold medal.

Unlike its forebears, La Esmeralda featured three bridges made of gold, subscribing to a more refined style. The savonette case of the pocket watch was also elaborately engraved and the dial was dressed in white Grand Feu enamel. Some 135 years later, the legend of La Esmeralda lives on in exquisite wristwatch form with La Esmeralda Tourbillon ‘A Secret’ Eternity Edition.

Bathed in honey-toned light

La Esmeralda Tourbillon ‘A Secret’ Eternity Edition is housed in a 43 mm pink gold case. It features Three Gold Bridges in a matching hue and is endowed with a honey colour Grand Feu dial. The case, lugs, bezel and buckle are intricately engraved and pay homage to the historic pocket watch of 1889. The dial is enlivened with a combination of sunray and circular guilloché, expertly imparted by hand using a traditional rose engine lathe.

At the heart of the watch sits the Signature Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges, the Manufacture calibre GP09600. Equipped with a discreet white gold micro-rotor, located beneath the barrel, the movement offers the convenience of automatic winding and plays host to golden engravings, referencing the patent filed for the Tourbillon with Three Bridges movement in 1884. Enriched with a cornucopia of refined finishes, the Manufacture calibre GP09600 perpetuates the Maison’s reputation for crafting the finest expressions of watchmaking.

As well as the dial, the case is dressed in honey-toned Grand Feu enamel. This artisanal technique is executed at the Maison’s sister company, Donzé Cardrans. Employing a Champlevé technique imbues the surface with a fade-free allure. The rear of case is intricately engraved with a fluted pattern and adorned with three galloping horses found on the historic pocket watch. The significance of the equine scene is a secret never to be revealed.

This latest addition to the Bridges Collection pays tribute to Constant Girard’s exceptional pocket watch chronometer of 1889, showcasing the rare skills and talents of the Manufacture’s craftspeople. An abundance of light

La Chaux-de-Fonds, once described as a ‘huge factory town’, has been dedicated to watchmaking since the 18th century and is now a Unesco World Heritage site. In 1856, Girard-Perregaux opened its inaugural Manufacture in the city. Today, the company is still headquartered in the city with its Manufacture located on Rue Numa Droz.

After suffering a devastating fire in the 18th century, La Chaux-de-Fonds was rebuilt with the help of a local engineer, Charles-Henri Junod. Purposely designed for watchmaking, the wide streets are arranged in a grid, tiered against the hillside. The tall buildings incorporate large windows, designed to drink in light, illuminating the workbenches where fine timepieces are made. The city and the surrounding area continue to imbue each Girard-Perregaux timepiece with a distinctive character, much loved by watch aficionados.

New, yet familiar

During the 1860s, Constant Girard began sketching ideas for a new pocket watch equipped with three bridges. He redefined the role of a bridge from being merely a structural movement component to an aesthetic feature as well. When, in 1867, he unveiled a pocket tourbillon watch, endowed with three parallel nickel silver bridges, he introduced to watchmaking a new design philosophy, embracing both shapes and depths. Later, in 1889, the specification of the bridges was elevated to using noble metal with the release of the famous Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges; widely considered one of the oldest mechanical signatures in watchmaking.

In 2021, the Manufacture released an avant-garde timepiece, the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges, an expression of Haute Horlogerie that artfully harnesses natural light. Crafted in the company’s Grand Complications Atelier and inspired by the famous pocket watch of 1889, this contemporary creation featured an ingenious movement construction.

Beyond functionality

Eschewing a conventional mainplate, the eponymous bridges not only support the geartrain, barrel and tourbillon, but also provide the essential structural integrity for the remainder of the movement. Appearing to float mid-air, the bridges are braced by neat, openworked plinths that project from the interior wall of the case. Due to the absence of a conventional dial, the indexes are affixed to the case, fulfilling a functional role while preserving the airy appearance of the watch’s interior.

Subscribing to a philosophy of continuous improvement, the Maison has recently revisited the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges and made several improvements to its specification.

One of the updates for 2024 relates to the indexes which are a new design and include twin batons at noon. The sapphire crystals, positioned front and rear, remain ‘box’ style but are now more curved and, when viewed from the side, appear more symmetrical. A larger crown, endowed with a rounder shape, proves easier to manipulate, while the overall design of the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges has been refined to incorporate smoother contours.

By shortening the lugs and making the middle of the case rounder, the Manufacture’s design team has improved wearer comfort, something that will be especially noticeable to individuals with slimmer wrists.

The updated Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges also incorporates some minute changes that may go unnoticed by non-experts. For instance, the hour and minute hands are now satin-finished and incorporate additional Super-LumiNova, augmenting readability in dim light. The watch comes supplied with two straps, a new fabric effect strap, first seen on last year’s groundbreaking Neo Constant Escapement, and an additional black alligator strap enhanced with a gold effect.

Some things never change

While the Manufacture has revisited the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges, first released in 2021, and made subtle improvements, some things remain unchanged. The three gold bridges positioned to the front of the watch remain dressed in black. Girard-Perregaux, a brand known for its nuanced approach to design, presents the trio of gold bridges in a contemporary format. The upper and lower surfaces of the pink gold bridges are dressed in black PVD, while the chamfered edges eschew black coating, revealing a discreet sliver of gleaming pink gold. The flawless execution and notable gleam of each bevelled edge is the product of time-served hands using a small piece of boxwood to achieve the perfect polish; in total, two days of work are required to fully finish the set of three gold Bridges.

La Chaux-de-Fonds, May 7th, 2024 (10AM CET) – The Girard-Perregaux Laureato adds two new chapters in a story that began in 1975, this time housed in a sumptuous 42mm Pink Gold case and upholding Laureato tradition of contrasting shapes and finishes. On this occasion, the eponymous noble metal is paired with bewitching Sage Green and Ultramarine Blue dials that appear to change shade when viewed from different angles.

Laureato, an alluring silhouette since 1975

In 1975, Girard-Perregaux released the inaugural Laureato, a timepiece designed in-house comprising several different shapes brought together to form a cohesive aesthetic. Close examination reveals an octagonal bezel positioned atop a circular plinth which in turn is located upon an angular tonneau­ shaped case. Throughout the composition there is an exquisite interplay between polished and satin finished surfaces as can be seen on these new Laureato in Pink Gold. Both finishes are clearly defined and discrete from one another, thereby optimising the effect. This arrangement of different shapes and contrasting finishes has come to define the Laureato, a watch that is instantly recognisable when viewed from afar.

Golden baton-style hour and minute hands collaborate with baton-type indexes, imparting meaning free of ambiguity. Both the hands and indexes are lined with luminescent material and emit a notable glow in dim light. The central seconds hand features a GP-themed counterweight and almost kisses the minute track positioned on the flange, facilitating ease of read-off. The date is presented at 3 o’clock and employs white numerals set atop an ultramarine blue or sage green disc, matching the main dial as horological etiquette dictates. Gold GP initials reside at 12 o’clock, while the brand’s name and GP logo, both executed in white, are located below.

Sage Green: ‘wise, especially as a result of great experience’

Thumb the pages of a dictionary and look up the word, ‘sage’. It’s defined as ‘wise, especially as a result of great experience’, words that could be used to describe Girard-Perregaux. Indeed, having amassed much experience over the last 230 years, the manufacture has become known for its sagacity, making the choice of dial colour on the new Laureato Pink Gold Sage Green very apt.

Ultramarine Blue: still looking good after 6000 years

The colour, ‘ultramarine blue’, can be traced back to the 4th millennium BCE and to the appearance of lapis lazuli. The name is derived from the Latin ‘ultramarinus’, meaning ‘beyond the sea’, a reference to the region of its origin. Ultramarine blue, sometimes called ‘true blue’, later became a defining feature of many Renaissance paintings; however, as it was incredibly expensive, artists used it sparingly. As its name suggests, the dial of the new Laureato Pink Gold Ultramarine Blue is executed in the sought after shade.

Both dials are enlivened with a Claus de Paris motif, endowing their surface with a three-dimensional allure. The textured dial is the result of a time-consuming manufacturing process of over 50 steps that accentuate its intricately weaved pattern. This latter characteristic causes the dial shades to appear different when viewed from various angles. Indeed, its surface exhibits fifty shades of green and blue, each one, eminently seductive.

Presented in 18-carat pink gold, these models uphold the Laureato tradition of juxtaposing polished
and satin finished surfaces throughout. A matching pink gold bracelet ergonomically unites the watch with the wearer’s wrist.

A brilliant mind

The Manufacture Calibre GP01800, a self-winding movement comprising 191 components, is beautifully finished. The main plate is adorned with circular graining, while some components feature bevelling, mirror polishing, satin finish and various engravings. The bridges are decorated with straight Cotes de Geneve and the pink gold oscillating weight is embellished with circular Cotes de Geneve. Lastly, the movement has a power reserve of at least 54 hours.

Numerous operations are required to complete the Laureato’s in-house movement, including its refined and time-consuming finishing. Founded in 1791, Girard-Perregaux, an independent Manufacture, has amassed much know-how over the last 230 years and has gained an enviable reputation for crafting fine watches, each blessed with a brilliant mind. The Laureato has benefited from this expertise and is powered by a manufacture movement since its launch in 1975.

In 1975, Girard-Perregaux released a groundbreaking watch equipped with what was considered at the time a cutting-edge movement, the aptly named ‘Quartz Chronometer’. Completely developed in-house from the beginning, as was its design, the model immediately proved popular, especially in style-conscious Italy, one of the Maison’s most important markets at the time. Ultimately, the name was adopted by the Maison and has since become familiar to legions of watch aficionados.

From the outset, the design of the Laureato united a number of different shapes to form a distinctive, yet cohesive, look. Each Laureato comprises an octagonal bezel that sits atop a circular plinth which in turn is positioned above an angular tonneau-shaped case. But despite having geometric, clean-cut lines, the Laureato’s case also has a gentle character, reminiscent of a rock shaped by nature and devoid of harshness. Throughout the composition there is an exquisite interplay between polished and satin finished surfaces. Both finishes are clearly defined and discrete from one another, thereby optimising the effect. Lastly, the exterior is completed with an integrated bracelet that ergonomically hugs the wearer’s wrist, bestowing a comfortable fit. It is this assemblage of contrasting forms that has led to the Laureato’s unique profile, making it instantly recognisable when viewed from afar.

A special edition for a special partnership

Laureato, a masterful union of shapes since 1975

In 1975, Girard-Perregaux released a groundbreaking watch equipped with what was considered at the time a cutting-edge movement, the aptly named ‘Quartz Chronometer’. Completely developed in-house from the beginning, as was its design, the model immediately proved popular, especially in style-conscious Italy, one of the Maison’s most important markets at the time. Watch collectors in this country began referring to the model as the ‘the graduate (Laureato in Italian) of the school of Girard-Perregaux’. This affectionate name served as an acknowledgement of the model’s prize-winning success and extraordinary precision. Ultimately, the name was adopted by the Maison and has since become familiar to legions of watch aficionados.

From the outset, the design of the Laureato united a number of different shapes to form a distinctive, yet cohesive, look. Each Laureato comprises an octagonal bezel that sits atop a circular plinth which in turn is positioned above an angular tonneau-shaped case. But despite having geometric, clean-cut lines, the Laureato’s case also has a gentle character, reminiscent of a rock shaped by nature and devoid of harshness. Throughout the composition there is an exquisite interplay between polished and satin finished surfaces. Both finishes are clearly defined and discrete from one another, thereby optimising the effect. Lastly, the exterior is completed with an integrated bracelet that ergonomically hugs the wearer’s wrist, bestowing a comfortable fit. It is this assemblage of contrasting forms that has led to the Laureato’s unique profile, making it instantly recognisable when viewed from afar.

A dial exhibiting a myriad of shades

Housed in a 38mm steel case, this new mid-size timepiece is endowed with a copper-coloured dial, enriched with a Clous de Paris motif. This classical pattern, composed of multiple pyramidal structures, imbues the dial with a three-dimensional appearance. While the dial appears copper from some angles, it can sometimes appear ochre or resemble burnt oak as well as a myriad of shades in between. It is this dynamic character that confers tonal contrast and imparts lasting joy.

Baton-type hour and minute hands collaborate with matching indexes. Both the hands and indexes are lined with luminescent material and evince a white glow in dim light. The golden central sweep seconds hand sits in concert with the copper-hued dial and matches the GP logo located at 12 o’clock. An aperture, positioned adjacent the crown, presents the date in white text, set atop a copper-toned disc, matching the dominant dial hue as horological etiquette dictates.

A dial encircled with a diamond-set bezel

The octagonal bezel is set with 8 large stones at each corner with smaller stones positioned in between. Comprising 56 diamonds in total (∼ 0.90 ct), the facets of the diamonds toy with light. At first, they appear colourless; however, as the watch is rotated, the precious stones come alive, revealing every shade of the electromagnetic spectrum. The sparkling appearance of the diamonds is complemented by the polished central links of the integrated bracelet, heightening the model’s overall lustre.

An inner beauty

Housed in a slender case, just 10.02mm in height, the Laureato 38mm Copper Diamond Bezel is equipped with a self-winding movement, the Calibre GP03300. Visible via a see-through case-back, the movement is enriched with a plethora of refined details, perpetuating the Maison’s reputation for fine watches. The main plate is adorned with circular graining, while some components feature bevelling, mirror-polishing, satin finish, snailing, sunray finish and various engravings. The bridges are decorated with straight Côtes de Genève and the pink gold oscillating weight is embellished with circular Côtes de Genève. Lastly, the movement has a power reserve of at least 46 hours.

The Laureato Chronograph Ti49 unites the model’s intricately-shaped case design with ultra-desirable Grade 5 titanium. This is the first time this strong alloy has featured on a classic Laureato reference. Beyond its strength, this alloy is light, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic.

Two remarkable men driven by an innate need to discover, invent and learn

Orphaned at a young age, Jean-François Bautte (1772-1837) had to grow up quickly. He embarked on an apprenticeship at a young age, amassing an incredible understanding of watchmaking as well as several associated trades such as case assembly, guilloché and goldsmithery. In 1791, just 19 years of age, Bautte signed his first watches in the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, Geneva. This event sowed the seeds for what would later become known as Girard-Perregaux, the esteemed Maison based in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

In the same year Bautte signed his inaugural watch, an English clergyman discovered titanium in Cornwall, England. William Gregor (1761-1817) was fascinated with minerals and spent time studying sand deposits in the Manaccan Valley. He was able to isolate calx, formed from heating a mineral. This process left behind an unknown metal. Gregor named the residual metal ‘manaccanite’, a material that later became. Known as ‘titanium’, a name inspired by the great titans of Greek mythology.

The Manaccan Valley is approximately 1400 km from Geneva, yet both Bautte and Gregor were driven by the same innate need to discover, invent and learn.

Grade 5 titanium – introduction

Peruse the periodic table with an outstretched finger, sweeping from left to right, and you will discover, in Period 4, the element Titanium (Ti). In order to isolate titanium in pure form, various processes were developed. The Hunter process was invented in 1910 and thereafter the Kroll process was conceived during the 1930s, a process that is still used today.

Over the years, numerous grades of titanium have been created by legions of specialists, alloying pure titanium with other elements to derive an array of benefits. Titanium alloy 6-4, better known as Grade 5 titanium, was invented in 1951 by Professor Stan Abkowitz. It has since been used in an array of industries, including chemical, medical, marine, firearms, aerospace, etc, as well as for the making of fine timepieces.

Grade 5 titanium is composed of almost 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium and small traces of iron and oxygen. It is light, strong, stiff, corrosion resistant, non-magnetic and hypoallergenic; all useful attributes for watchmaking.

A further benefit of using this particular form of titanium alloy is that it can be polished to a brilliant gleam, a characteristic that Girard-Perregaux has wonderfully exploited on its latest model, the Laureato Chronograph Ti49.

Grade 5 titanium – making components

Not to be confused with cheaper types of titanium, Grade 5 titanium is both challenging and costly to machine; however, consistent with fine watchmaking, the wearer benefits justify the protracted efforts. It is for this reason that an increasing number of watch brands now refer to this alloy in the same reverential tones as noble metals such as gold and platinum. Paradoxically, the resultant case and bracelet appear warm while simultaneously looking eminently cool.

What’s in a name?

First released in 1975, the ‘Laureato’ was initially called the ‘Quartz Chronometer’. However, in Italy, the most important market for Girard-Perregaux at the time, the model soon became known among the cognoscenti as the ‘the graduate (Laureato in Italian) of the school of Girard-Perregaux’. This affectionate name served as acknowledgement of the model’s prize-wining success and extraordinary precision. Ultimately, the name was adopted by the Maison. Coincidentally, the octagonal bezel sits atop the case, like a laurel crown sits upon the head of a laureate.

With a significant birthday around the corner, Girard-Perregaux celebrates the 49th anniversary of its iconic watch with the release of the Laureato Chronograph Ti49.

The Laureato – never a product of haste

The Laureato Chronograph Ti49 is housed in a 42 mm case and subscribes to the iconic design language first seen on the inaugural model of 1975. The octagonal bezel sits atop a circular plinth which in turn rests upon a tonneau-shaped case. The elaborate profile of the case freely engages with light, courtesy of its many facets and angles, producing pockets of brilliance and shade. Clearly, the historic complexity of making the Laureato’s bezel, case and bracelet are heightened with the use of the Grade 5 titanium used for the first time in the last generation Chronograph.

The hue of this ultra-desirable alloy bestows a warm appearance. Moreover, by using Grade 5 titanium, Girard-Perregaux has also been able to endow the Laureato Chronograph Ti49 with refined, contrasting finishes. Brushed surfaces are juxtaposed with polished highlights. Indeed, the aforementioned circular plinth, the beautifully defined case edges, chronograph pushers as well as the central links of the bracelet are all presented in gleaming form.

The Manufacture has sought to accentuate titanium’s grey hue by embracing a palette of monochromatic shades. The dial is grey and enriched with a Clous de Paris pattern, a feature that will inevitably appeal to brand devotees. Grey PVD-treated baton-style hour and minute hands are teamed with matching baton-type indexes. Both the hands and indexes are lined with white luminescent material and emit a white glow in dim light.

Three snailed counters: a 30-minute chronograph register, a 12-hour chronograph register and a small seconds display, punctuate the textured dial. A date display, located between 4 and 5 o’clock completes the list of functions. The GP logo, name, minute track, as well as the markings encircling the counters, are all executed in white, contrasting wonderfully with the grey coloured dial and aiding readability.

The Manufacture Calibre GP03300 resides within the lightweight exterior of the Laureato Chronograph Ti49. This self-winding movement, comprising 419 components, is beautifully finished. It is adorned with several forms of decoration, including ‘Côtes de Genève’, both in circular and straight form, circular graining, satin finish, chamfering, mirror polishing, snailing, engravings, sunray finish as well as featuring blued steel screws. All types of finishing are skilfully imparted by the Maison’s team of talented craftspeople and watchmakers.

We will never know if Jean-François Bautte heard of William Gregor’s discovery; however, there is no question that 1791 was a remarkable year. It is the work of both men that has ultimately led to the creation of this contemporary watch, a timepiece rich in tradition and brimming with attributes.

Embracing the future

The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition is the latest addition to the Swiss watchmaker’s Bridges collection, a range of models that has long been entwined with the company’s DNA. In 1867, Constant Girard sketched a pocket watch endowed with three parallel bridges. Unusually, these prominent bridges, essential components that form part of a movement’s structure, were refined and famously became design elements. However, while Girard-Perregaux is justly proud of its heritage it does not languish in the past, but wholeheartedly embraces the future, often uniting thoughtprovoking styling, cutting-edge materials and inventive mechanisms, something that is  clearly manifest with the new Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition.

A shared language

Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux both speak the same language when it comes to luxury. They each understand the importance of consistent design while simultaneously seeking advancement. Underpinning this shared  philosophy is a belief that mechanical components should arouse intense emotions. The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition, a watch that perpetuates some of the design ideas found on former collaborative watches, also  delivers a new, fresh-faced appearance, suffused with considered details. It eschews a conventional dial to reveal its inverted movement, the Calibre GP0840000-2164, a configuration that brings components usually found to  the rear of the watch, relocating them to the front. Upholding the spirit of the Bridges collection, the functional components on this model contribute to its overall visual allure. The Neo-shaped bridges support the gear train  and balance and the wearer is invited to witness several parts in conversation, working together to impart time. Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, the arrangement of movement components confers symmetry, thereby  delivering a harmonious appearance.

Consistent design

Skeletonised baton-type indexes proclaim the hours and minutes. Inspired by the automotive world where extraneous material is removed to save weight, this watch dispenses with a conventional dial. The hands incorporate luminescent material which bestows a green emission in restricted light, a colour that will forever be associated with Aston Martin. The suspended indexes, located on a ring encircling the dial, project outwards and are lined  with luminescent material which again appear green in dim conditions. Both the design of the hands and indexes uphold the styling of previous dual-branded watches. In between each index, crisp green markings, positioned  on the aforesaid ring, denote each minute in lucid form. Endowed with two Neo bridges, executed in Aston Martin Green, the design pays tribute to Constant’s 19th century creation, albeit realised in a contemporary form, while the colour of the bridges honours Aston Martin and its rich history of crafting high-performance cars.

Power is essential

Power is a prerequisite for performance, something that is evident within any creation bearing the names Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux. A barrel, effectively the fuel tank of the watch, is positioned at 1.30. It’s supported  by a black openworked bridge and bears the name of the Swiss Manufacture. This watch is automatic, harvesting energy from the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist, using a small oscillating weight, termed a microrotor. The dimensions of the micro-rotor contribute to the movement’s slender profile, just 5.45 mm in height. Furthermore, it also affords unhindered views of the movement. In this instance, the micro-rotor is engraved with the name  of the British luxury marque, sharing equal status with the Manufacture’s name gracing the barrel. When designing the barrel and micro-rotor, the joint creative team took inspiration from the brakes which are revealed behind Aston Martin DB12’s spoked wheels, showcasing sharper lines and extra openings.

A play with colour

Colour is a useful means of accentuating shapes, imbuing sculptural forms with light and shade, emotion and passion. Appraising the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition, brushed greys, vibrant rubies, brooding blacks and silver-coloured wheels unite to impart time while simultaneously stirring the soul. Most notably, the Aston Martin Green Neo Bridges reveal different tones as they engage with light. Endowing the bridges with colour while
maintaining their alluring three-dimensional appearance was technically challenging. The lightweight case, measuring 45 mm in diameter, is formed of titanium dressed in a suit of black DLC. Effortlessly stylish, it plays a deferential role to the watch’s display, allowing both static and dynamic movement components the opportunity to shine.

A DB12 for the wrist

Peruse the sinuous contours of the Aston Martin DB12, the world’s first super tourer and its intent is clear: to cover great distances in comfort while making each mile a thrilling and memorable experience. The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition shares the same philosophy. Each contour and every facet are the result of protracted thought, intended to deliver performance and a sublime wearer experience. The new Laureato Absolute 8Tech, the latest addition to the Laureato Absolute collection, draws on the Manufacture’s amassed knowledge. Using 8Tech, a groundbreaking technique, the case is formed of octagonal carbon parts, creating a random structural pattern. Once again, the Laureato Absolute showcases Girard-Perregaux’s ability to optimise avant-garde materials to breathtaking effect.

Always inventive

When the inaugural Laureato was released in 1975, it cleverly tapped into the horological zeitgeist of the 70s. The advent of quartz movements caused many individuals to question the relevance of mechanical watches when battery-powered watches proffered such incredible precision. Moreover, the watch-buying public appreciated the styling of sports models featuring integrated bracelets that looked equally at ease with jeans as well as cocktail attire.

Girard-Perregaux, a Manufacture known for its inventive spirit, was at the forefront of quartz technology. Indeed, the frequency of 32,768 Hz was set by the company and was subsequently adopted as the universal standard for quartz watches. Ultimately, the mechanical watch enjoyed a renaissance and is now highly prized by legions of watch aficionados. The Laureato is the first watch with an integrated bracelet to bear an in-house design and movement since day one.

A masterful play with contrasts

The styling of the Laureato masterfully unites differently shaped components. From the outset, the model was designed in-house. It features an octagonal bezel, positioned above a circular plinth, which in turn rests upon an angular tonneau-shaped case. While these different forms are juxtaposed, they coalesce harmoniously.

The Laureato Absolute – high performance materials

In 2019, the Maison released a new expression of the 1975 classic, the Laureato Absolute. Sharing the same genetic codes as the Laureato, the Laureato Absolute collection embraces avant-garde design, bestowing each reference with an overtly sporty appearance.

Since the advent of the Laureato Absolute, Girard-Perregaux has repeatedly employed a variety of groundbreaking materials, including metallised sapphire crystal, carbon glass and rubber alloy. Now, the Maison perpetuates this philosophy with a new model, the Laureato Absolute 8Tech, a watch housed in a carbon/titanium composite made using an innovative and unique process.

Lucky for some

Courtesy of its high-tech housing, the 44mm Laureato Absolute 8Tech delivers much wrist presence while remaining incredibly light. The featherlight mass confers excellent wearer comfort, a characteristic which makes it ideal for daily wear.

The case material is composed of unidirectional, non-braided and pre-impregnated carbon fibres, combined with lightweight titanium powder to form extremely thin layers, measuring just 0.05mm in thickness. These layers are superimposed upon one another, each orientated differently to form ‘stacks’ which are then cut into octagons, an industry first.

The octagonal shapes are placed in a mould and subjected to heat and extreme pressure. Thereafter, the case components, including the bezel, are milled from the material and then subsequently refined by hand. This one-of-a-kind technique endows the case with a shimmering appearance.

While Girard-Perregaux could have created circular shapes, the octagonal form is close to the heart of the Maison, it’s a shape that has become a brand signature since the release of the inaugural Laureato in 1975. In addition, the octagonal shape, featuring eight sides, is a symbol of luck for billions of people.

Five times lighter than steel but with comparable strength and rigidity, the high-tech case material provides a compelling case for selection. Interestingly, it has a wavy appearance, reminiscent of Damascus steel.

A revealing dial

A sandwich-type construction method is used for the dial. The upper surface is sandblasted and presented in a gradient grey finish, echoing the tones of the case and bezel. The lower layer is formed of Grade 5 titanium, partially revealed via a series of apertures in the upper surface. These arrow-tipped openings serve as indexes, while rectangular markings positioned adjacent incorporate luminescent treatment, delivering a white emission in restricted light.

The dial incorporates three sandblasted counters along with a date display positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock. Baton-type hour and minute hands, presented in a grey titanium hue, are lined with luminescent material (white emission). The fine central chronograph seconds hand, used in conjunction with the crisp minute track, presents elapsed seconds in an intelligible form. The dial composition plays with textures, colours and depths to provide peerless readability and a handsome, neoteric appearance.

Ultra-modern, but infused with traditional craftsmanship
The Laureato Absolute 8Tech is endowed with a Manufacture movement, the self-winding Calibre GP03300-1058. A smoked sapphire crystal positioned to the rear of the watch subscribes to the same monochromatic tones employed elsewhere on the case and bezel. The movement comprises 419 components and features exemplary finishing, including Côtes de Genève, chamfering and straight graining, perpetuating the traditional skills practised by Girard-Perregaux since 1791.

The optimal wrist fit
The Laureato 8Tech is presented on a black rubber strap featuring a fabric-effect look and incorporating grey stitching. Upholding Laureato tradition, the strap is integrated within the case, a characteristic that confers superb wearer comfort. The strap is paired with a folding titanium buckle with black PVD treatment that also incorporates a micro adjustment system, allowing the wearer to fine tune the sizing of the strap, granting the optimal wrist fit.
The model will be available worldwide in all authorised Girard-Perregaux retailers from October 2023.

Both brands demonstrate a passion for refined craftsmanship and have been working together, sharing their understanding of design, materials and technology. This latest model celebrates the iconic Three Bridges pocket watch from the 19th century in a decidedly contemporary way, down to the smallest details, including the strap.

The latter is a world premiere, presented in black calf leather and featuring Girard-Perregaux Rubber Alloy, an innovative rubber insert injected with white gold. The design of the strap is intended to evoke thoughts of Aston Martin racing cars of the past.

Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, this model skilfully plays with proportions and shapes much to the delight of aesthetes.

The 44 millimetre case of the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges – Aston Martin Edition is formed of Grade 5 titanium, a strong, hypoallergenic alloy selected by Aston Martin for its lightweight properties. It is suffused with black DLC, bestowing the watch with a stealthy appearance. Interestingly, titanium ore was discovered in Great Britain, the home of Aston Martin, back in 1791 by an English clergyman, William Gregor, in the same year Girard-Perregaux was founded.

A sapphire crystal ‘box’ is positioned front of house, as well as to the rear, coaxing light to illuminate the case interior, thereby augmenting readability. The movement eschews a mainplate, sitting between both panes of sapphire crystal and seemingly floating in mid-air. Three bridges, an iconic signature of Girard-Perregaux, span the dial and are formed of titanium with black PVD treatment and polished angles. The design endows the timepiece with an airy appearance, affording breathtaking views of movement components ordinarily hidden from view. While Girard-Perregaux has a long history of making the invisible visible, in this instance it has ventured off-piste, creating a watch whose movement appears to levitate within the case.

This is achieved by paring back the movement, causing the mainplate to seemingly disappear within the case, thereby creating the illusion of the movement flying within the case. It was this particular characteristic that led to the term ‘Flying Bridges’. 

The cage of the tourbillon, positioned in the lower portion of the dial, is ‘lyre-shaped’, a characteristic found on all the company’s tourbillons dating back to the 19th century. A blued hand affixed to the cage imparts the running seconds. The tourbillon cage, measuring a mere 10mm in diameter, is composed of 79 components which collectively weigh only 0.25 grams. This remarkably low figure helps mitigate energy consumption.

The barrel, positioned at 12 o’clock, is openworked, affording partial views of the mainspring. A white gold micro-rotor, positioned beneath the barrel, energises the mainspring and, unlike most automatic watches, it grants unobstructed views of the movement. The car company’s name is engraved on the vertical flank of the micro-rotor and is filled with white luminescent treatment which appears blue in restricted light. Likewise, the indexes and hands are also treated with white luminescent treatment and, once again, emit a blue glow in dim light.

Rarely do we work with others to reinterpret the Three Bridges, however, on this occasion, we have made an exception, mindful of Aston Martin’s prowess for design.

“When viewing the design of an Aston Martin, you will note the firm’s distinctive front grille, first seen on the DB Mark III of the late 50s. Likewise, the scoops and side strakes found on the company’s modern-day models are functional elements, intended to improve airflow while enriching the overall appearance of each car.”

“At Girard-Perregaux we share a similar philosophy. In astronomy, terrestrial time is the measure of time defined by the Earth’s orbital motion. The Sun revolves around the Earth every 24 hours. Celestial time, more commonly known as sidereal time, equals the rotation period of a celestial object. Basically, the celestial vault scrolls past the Earth in just 23 hours and 56 minutes. Unlike the real world, viewing constellations on the dial of this model is not impeded by light pollution or limited light.

The terrestrial globe, positioned on the right side of the dial, rotates 360° every 24 hours while the celestial globe, positioned opposite, rotates 360° every 23 hours and 56 minutes. The different pace of each globe is barely perceptible to the human eye; however, it demonstrates Girard Perregaux’s meticulous attention to detail.

The Tourbillon is presented at the base of the mainplate. Its purpose it to mitigate the adverse influence of gravity on the balance, thereby enhancing precision. A Neo Bridge straddles the opening for the tourbillon and is made of space-age Grade 5 titanium alloy with black PVD treatment. This bridge and large opening afford mesmerising views of the Tourbillon cage rotating and the balance and escapement in motion. The complexity of a tourbillon necessitates much expertise to assemble and regulate. This competence has always been at the epicentre of Girard-Perregaux’s DNA, dating back to the 1860s when the company produced its first pocket watch equipped with a Tourbillon.

The layout of the Cosmos Infinity Edition ensures that all the complications are aligned in perfect symmetry. To enhance this sense of balance, the watch dispenses with a conventional crown. Instead, an innovative winding and setting system is located on the reverse of the timepiece and recalls the styling of pocket watches from yesteryear. The setting system features three engravings, filled with luminescent ceramic indicating the purpose of each bélière.

The use of black onyx for the dial and globes symbolises the depth of the universe and its infinite mystery. This exemplar of fine watchmaking embraces an ethereal domain where artisans shape and polish onyx discs by hand, culminating in the onyx exhibiting a mirror-like appearance.

It takes no fewer than 15 different operations to create the thin dial and three-dimensional globes and requires exceptional skill to realise these components.Befitting the appellation of ‘Haute Horlogerie’, the Calibre GP09320-1440 is enriched with high-end finishing. The titanium Neo Bridge, presented at the base of the mainplate, is black PVD-treated, sandblasted and incorporates hand-bevelling. Similarly, the mainplate is black PVD-treated and embellished with circular-graining, sandblasting and bevelling. In contrast to the sapphire crystal on its flat caseback, the Cosmos Infinity Edition features a sapphire crystal box, providing a three-dimensional view of the dial area. Its domed shape requires four to five times more material to shape and polish

In 1975, Girard-Perregaux was one of the first companies to offer a sporty elegant model equipped with an octagonal bezel and an integrated steel bracelet. The design of the Laureato has since become known for its enchanting interplay of straight lines and curves and becoming blend of polished and satin-brushed surfaces. It embraces the notion of ‘sporty-chic’ while also complementing formal attire. Its extraordinary versatility has led to its iconic status.

Now, Girard-Perregaux unveils the latest chapter in the Laureato story. The Laureato Infinity Edition is equipped with a handcrafted deep black onyx dial. Pink gold accents appear from the darkness, drawing the eyes to the information presented. This blend of aesthetic codes also features on other members of the Infinity collection, an expression of the brand’s infinite passion and unwavering respect for craftsmanship.

The Laureato Infinity is available in 38mm and 42mm options. Both versions are housed in a stainless steel case which, along with the black onyx dial, provides the perfect foil for the various indications to shine. Silver-toned baton-shaped hour and minute hands emulate the appearance of the steel case, while the central seconds hand, applied indexes and GP logo, all formed of pink gold, reinforce the overall sense of luxury. The date is conveyed with white numerals set against a black disc, matching the hue of the dial.

The bezel of the Laureato 38mm is adorned with 56 brilliant cut diamonds totalling 〜 0.90 ct. Both versions of the Laureato Infinity Edition feature an in-house self-winding movement, enhanced with traditional finishing and a pink gold oscillating weight. Consistent with Laureato tradition, alternating satin and polished finishes feature throughout. Great care is required when polishing the case and bracelet to ensure each type of finish is discrete with crisp delineation. The raised octagonal bezel features convex and concave surfaces which toy with light, culminating in alternating pockets of brilliance and shade.

The black onyx used for the dial draws on the expertise of time-served craftspeople who shape and polish the material by hand. Creating thin dials from onyx requires no fewer than 15 different operations, however, the resultant surface looks exquisite with its mirror-like appearance. The marriage of deep black onyx and pink gold accents delivers a becoming contrast, a trait synonymous with the Laureato name. Wempe will exclusively distribute both versions of the Laureato Infinity edition, in 42mm and 38mm, for a limited period of two months in select points of sale across Germany as well as its flagship stores in New York and London, beginning in September 2020. Subsequently, both models will be available worldwide in authorised Girard-Perregaux retailers.

This is when the Girard Perregaux Laureato AWC edition was born. We decided we wanted a color that is powerful, noticeable and sporty. Yellow was born 🙂

As you probably know, not many watches out there have a yellow dial mainly because you really need to have the guts to wear such a watch on a full steel bracelet and draw the attention of the people around you – because that is exactly what this edition did.

The whole focus is the yellow clou de Paris special dial developed by GP for us and only used on our Laureato with the small touch of hindi numerals date.

Every watch comes with a set of three straps; in steel bracelet, black leather and yellow stitching and black rubber.

The 19 pieces special edition has its case back engraved with the name of each collector, the name of the club and 1 of 19 special edition written on it.

The watches were delivered in Dubai with Al Fardan family in Hakkasan in a very special event where all collectors gathered from across the GCC to receive their watches as well.
