Lou Gehrig is remembered as one of baseball’s greatest players, having played 2,130 consecutive games for the New York Yankees, a record that earned him the nickname “The Iron Horse” and defined his reputation for endurance and consistency. In 1939, following his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), he delivered a farewell speech at Yankee Stadium that remains one of the most powerful moments in baseball history, marked by gratitude, humility, and composure in the face of adversity. His story continues to be closely associated with ALS awareness, and 2 June is now observed in the United States as “Lou Gehrig Day” in recognition of his legacy.

The Lou Gehrig Limited Edition translates this legacy into a series of thoughtful design details based on the Big Crown Pointer Date. The silver dial with its vertical brushed finish evokes the strength and endurance that defined Gehrig’s career as “The Iron Horse,” while subtle design cues reference the aesthetic language of the 1920s and 1930s. The dial combines a mix of numerals and indices, echoing vintage Oris design codes from the era. A blue “4” highlighted on the date ring pays tribute to his iconic jersey number, retired by the New York Yankees in 1940, while blue accents across the dial and the NATO strap reflect the team’s colours. The design is completed with a brown leather strap inspired by the stitching of a baseball glove, alongside an additional blue, white and grey NATO strap.

The story continues on the case back, where an engraving of Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech is paired with the individual limited-edition number. The watch is limited to 2,130 numbered pieces, a direct reference to his record-setting consecutive games and a lasting symbol of endurance. Through this edition, Oris supports The Lou and Eleanor Gehrig Family Foundation in its work to raise awareness of ALS and advance research into the disease.

The Yangtze finless porpoise, locally known as Jiangtun, is the last remaining freshwater cetacean in China and a treasured species of the Yangtze River ecosystem. Found only in the Yangtze River, it has faced severe population decline due to habitat loss, pollution, and human activity. In partnership with the Changjiang Conservation Foundation, Oris shines a light on the species and supports the foundation’s efforts to protect the river’s biodiversity through research, public awareness, and community led initiatives. In 2022, surveys estimated that just 1,249 individuals remain in the wild, highlighting the fragile beauty of this rare species.

Based on the Aquis Date 43.50 mm, the Yangtze Jiangtun Limited Edition translates this conservation mission into thoughtful design details. The blue-green mother-of-pearl dial captures and reflects light like the surface of the Yangtze River, enhanced by a wave pattern applied using a precise printing process inspired by the ultrasonic clicks the finless porpoise uses to communicate and navigate its cloudy waters. Crafted in stainless steel, the watch is powered by the Oris Calibre 733 automatic movement and designed for performance, with water resistance to 30 bar (300 metres). On the reverse, the case back is engraved with an image of the porpoise, reinforcing the emotional link between the timepiece and the species it represents.

The Yangtze Jiangtun Limited Edition is limited to 1,249 pieces, representing the number of the aquatic mammal thought to be left in existence. Through this release, Oris and the Changjiang Conservation Foundation aim to support ongoing conservation efforts, underscoring a shared belief that while no single individual can change the world alone, collective action can help protect it for the future.

Oris and MCC introduce the Father Time Limited Edition, a watch symbolising the community projects organised through the collaboration to bring Change for the Better

At Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, there’s a clock tower overlooking the pitch. Atop sits a weathervane, indicating just one of the many factors that affects decisions players make during a game of cricket.

But it’s so much more than a weathervane. It’s known as Father Time, and it’s one of the most iconic images in world cricket – and in sport. Cricket fans all over the world identify it with Lord’s and with the spirit of the game.

As a proud partner of MCC and the first Official Timekeeper of Lord’s, Oris is delighted to have created the Father Time Limited Edition, a bronze watch.

that highlights both our formal role at the club, and also Oris and MCC’s shared vision to bring Change for the Better.

MCC is the world’s most active cricket club, the owner of Lord’s and the guardian of the Laws of the game. Like Oris, the club believes passionately in working for the benefit of its communities, both local to Lord’s and abroad.  Together, we’re running a diverse programme for change including educational, social and sports events for the local community. Last year, we also co-hosted an Oris Change for the Better Day, teaming up to collect polluting  plastic waste from London’s streets.

We also share a commitment to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which encourage local, social and environmental action to deliver global change.

The Father Time Limited Edition celebrates the club, the game and the goals we share. Together, we can bring Change for the Better.

The call of time

At 40 mm and cast in solid bronze, the Father Time Limited Edition tells a story that began almost a century ago – and continues today.

The story of the Father Time weathervane began in the 1920s when Sir Herbert Baker, the architect of Lord’s Second Grand Stand, gifted it to the ground’s owners – Marylebone Cricket Club – to apologise for the late  completion of the building project. The year was 1926.

Father Time, a cast iron figure measuring almost a metre and a half and seen stooping over cricket stumps, is a mythical character said to watch over the passage of time.

It’s thought he represents Law 12.3 of the Laws of Cricket, held by MCC, which says that “After the call of Time, the bails shall be removed from both wickets.” This signals the end of the day’s play.

What better name to attach to a limited-edition watch created to mark the continuing collaboration between Oris and MCC, parties united by a common belief in their responsibility to bring Change for the Better?

The new watch is based on our Big Crown Pointer Date, a signature design characterised by its oversized crown that has been in constant production since 1938 when it was introduced as a pilot’s watch.

Its 40 mm case, fluted bezel and crown are made of solid, naturally ageing bronze, and it comes with both a bronze articulated bracelet and a light brown leather strap made from sustainably sourced deer leather produced by  our Swiss partner Cervo Volante.

The case back is stainless steel and engraved with an image of the Father Time weathervane and the limited-edition number (see page 12). The watch is limited to 1,926 pieces to mark the year Father Time was gifted to Lord’s.

Inside it is Oris Calibre 754, a Swiss Made automatic that equips the watch with its pointer date function, indicated by a central hand with a red, crescent-shaped tip.

Lord’s, MCC and cricket must contribute to a sustainable future, says Guy Lavender, MCC chief executive and secretary.

What makes Lord’s and MCC so special?
There’s a number of answers to this question and I believe ultimately it depends on your relationship with the Club and the Ground.

As a cricket club, our players take part in over 500 matches a year and for our non-playing members we have a whole host of member events and activities to get involved in, not least, of course, access to watch the widest range of cricket at any ground in the UK. From international matches featuring England’s men’s and women’s teams to fixtures in The Hundred, the Vitality Blast, the County Championship and the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, as well as a full schedule of other matches, including several finals days for clubs, schools and universities, there’s a format for every member to enjoy.

For supporters and spectators who come to watch cricket at Lord’s, they experience the thrill and excitement of the match, being surrounded by fellow fans following the ebb and flow of the game, which is wrapped in the  history and tradition that make your hair stand on end when you walk through

the gates. It’s an intriguing and somewhat fascinating place that we are very eager to open up to more people whenever we can.

What’s your vision for MCC as its CEO?

For Lord’s to be the finest cricket ground in the world, and for MCC to play its part in ensuring cricket is a game that’s open to everyone. Whether you play it, watch it, listen to it or work in it, there should be no barriers to  participating in the game. Ultimately, we want everything we do to be for the good of the game and to ensure cricket is a sport future generations will love as much as they do in the present and did in the past.

How is this vision being realised?

Our vision is effectively being funnelled through many different strands of activity. Our Cricket Strategy 2022-24 contains objectives and plans focused on how we can positively impact and grow the game at all levels.

Our community work ensures those closest to us can benefit from our presence.

Oris and Seddiqi Group have been our partners for our 19th Special Edition and we couldn’t have been more thrilled with the result. The Oris Pointer Date AWC Edition is limited to 50 pieces and sold out to club members exclusively

The Edition

We decided to create a unique edition that expresses our own idea of how we perceive our Pointer date should look like and how different we want it to be compared to all the editions out there.

This is where we came up with the rectangular configuration of the numerals 2,4,8 and 10 – the configurations allows the dial to be fully open with no distractions and makes it also unusual to see that configuration compared to for instance the 12,3,6,9 we usually see in many watches

The second important element in the watch and one that makes it the most unique of them all is the Trademark name of Oris in arabic. This is a first!! we designed the logo in collaboration with Wissam Shawkat known to have designed for Rolex, Chopard and many other watch brands. The final look is outstanding!!! the reason is its correct reflection of its English counterpart. The logo and the numerals have the same font and are very homogeneous

The third element of design and is a much more subtle one is the pointer color of the date pointer hand – look closely and you will realize that the color is not red but more yellowish – this color has the same pantone as the club logo.

The case back of the watch has our logo engraved fully on it , with the name of the club, the number of the piece and is made of stainless steel unlike the bronze case.

The Release

The 50 pieces were pre-sold to the club members ahead of delivery and the first pieces has been delivered during Geneva Watch Days as a first prototype for the edition.

All watches are expected to be delivered in November in Dubai during Dubai Watch Week in a closed special event for all new owners to enjoy their new piece and share the moment with other club members, the Oris and Seddiqi team.
