Louis Moinet recently released a limited edition of 8 pieces called the Space Revolution – and it is already a contender at the GPHG 2021 for best Tourbillon

Jean-Marie Shaller, the owner of the brand described this release as Art: “Space Revolution is art.” Several techniques have been used to push the limits in this creation. Moinet claims the Space Revolution is more accurate than a tourbillon using two oscillators with a differential gear mechanism. Perfect rotation and poising of the rotating elements using 5 ball-bearings with 7 ceramic balls and 1 ball-bearing with 9 ceramic balls.

The movements relied on two barrels, each supplying energy to a tourbillon – Ultra-complex mechanism with 470 components. The mechanism is hidden in the base of the chassis, measuring a mere 3.75 mm thick. The central column transmits orders to the tourbillons, spaceships and hands.

Space Revolution features an aventurine dial of exceptional quality. It was acquired more than 50 years ago by the father of Daniel Haas, the brand partner in extraordinary gems. From the original block to final polishing, more than eight handcrafted steps are required to prepare it for appearing at its best advantage.

The tourbillon cages are hexagonal and geometrically shaped – each cage weighs only 0.24 grams, in order to guarantee suitable speed through fine poising. The two tourbillons are both one minute flying tourbillon, mounted on a rotating satellite arms- we call them orbital flying tourbillon.

The science-fiction inspired spaceships are made of high-tech titanium. Titanium is ultra light. This lightness is essential for a very high-speed revolution: a complete turn of the dial takes five minutes for BLACK FORCE, and ten minutes for RED FORCE.

Why such a fast speed? It gives life to a playful show, in perpetual motion.

The spaceship serves a technical function, acting as a counterweight to the opposite tourbillon. The finishing is hand-crafted and the vibrancy of the red and black colours stems from an applied lacquer.

A selector placed on the case-back features two distinct positions for time-setting and winding. The crown is no longer pulled out and is used to either set the hands or to wind the mechanism.

A themed presentation box for an original creation. The fastening system faithfully reproduces BLACK FORCE and stems from complex modelling and a painstaking production process. The sphere is coated with a material immersing us into the graphic universe of meteorites.

1 June 2021, La Chaux-de-Fonds: The first timepiece borne of the recently announced partnership between Girard-Perregaux and Aston Martin has been revealed. The Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges – Aston Martin Edition unites the watchmaking expertise of Girard-Perregaux with Aston Martin’s unique knowledge of luxury and performance.

Both brands demonstrate a passion for refined craftsmanship and have been working together, sharing their understanding of design, materials and technology. This latest model celebrates the iconic Three Bridges pocket watch from the 19th century in a decidedly contemporary way, down to the smallest details, including the strap.

The latter is a world premiere, presented in black calf leather and featuring Girard-Perregaux Rubber Alloy, an innovative rubber insert injected with white gold. The design of the strap is intended to evoke thoughts of Aston Martin racing cars of the past.

Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, this model skilfully plays with proportions and shapes much to the delight of aesthetes.

The 44 millimetre case of the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges – Aston Martin Edition is formed of Grade 5 titanium, a strong, hypoallergenic alloy selected by Aston Martin for its lightweight properties. It is suffused with black DLC, bestowing the watch with a stealthy appearance. Interestingly, titanium ore was discovered in Great Britain, the home of Aston Martin, back in 1791 by an English clergyman, William Gregor, in the same year Girard-Perregaux was founded.

A sapphire crystal ‘box’ is positioned front of house, as well as to the rear, coaxing light to illuminate the case interior, thereby augmenting readability. The movement eschews a mainplate, sitting between both panes of sapphire crystal and seemingly floating in mid-air. Three bridges, an iconic signature of Girard-Perregaux, span the dial and are formed of titanium with black PVD treatment and polished angles. The design endows the timepiece with an airy appearance, affording breathtaking views of movement components ordinarily hidden from view. While Girard-Perregaux has a long history of making the invisible visible, in this instance it has ventured off-piste, creating a watch whose movement appears to levitate within the case.

This is achieved by paring back the movement, causing the mainplate to seemingly disappear within the case, thereby creating the illusion of the movement flying within the case. It was this particular characteristic that led to the term ‘Flying Bridges’.

The cage of the tourbillon, positioned in the lower portion of the dial, is ‘lyre-shaped’, a characteristic found on all the company’s tourbillons dating back to the 19th century. A blued hand affixed to the cage imparts the running seconds. The tourbillon cage, measuring a mere 10mm in diameter, is composed of 79 components which collectively weigh only 0.25 grams. This remarkably low figure helps mitigate energy consumption.

The barrel, positioned at 12 o’clock, is openworked, affording partial views of the mainspring. A white gold micro-rotor, positioned beneath the barrel, energises the mainspring and, unlike most automatic watches, it grants unobstructed views of the movement. The car company’s name is engraved on the vertical flank of the micro-rotor and is filled with white luminescent treatment which appears blue in restricted light. Likewise, the indexes and hands are also treated with white luminescent treatment and, once again, emit a blue glow in dim light.

Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Girard-Perregaux, said, “We are delighted to partner with Aston Martin, entrusting their team with arguably our most iconic timepiece, delivering a fresh perspective on Haute Horlogerie. Rarely do we work with others to reinterpret the Three Bridges, however, on this occasion, we have made an exception, mindful of Aston Martin’s prowess for design.

“When viewing the design of an Aston Martin, you will note the firm’s distinctive front grille, first seen on the DB Mark III of the late 50s. Likewise, the scoops and side strakes found on the company’s modern-day models are functional elements, intended to improve airflow while enriching the overall appearance of each car.”

“At Girard-Perregaux we share a similar philosophy. For example, when the Maison released the now-legendary Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges in 1867, it transformed three functional elements into attractive aesthetic features and demonstrated an approach that we continue to employ today. Finally, this latest partnership provides a fascinating chapter in Girard-Perregaux’s 230-year history.”

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, adds: “The greatest of the challenges we faced with the design of this new timepiece was that of scale, as one can imagine. We had to consider lines and proportion on a far smaller measure than we are used to in the realm of automotive design. That said, good design is good design, so whether it is a watch or a car, the principles remain the same. I’m delighted with the finished watch and congratulate everyone who worked on this project as this collaboration has produced a timepiece of great beauty.”

The Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges – Aston Martin Edition, a limited edition of 18 pieces, is immediately available worldwide in all authorised Girard-Perregaux retailers.

Czapek & Cie unveils the Place Vendôme Tourbillon ‘Dark Matter’, the ‘rockest’ version of its most luxurious collection. Inspired by the Place Vendôme ‘Ombres’ in titanium, it features a black titanium case with ADLC coating and dark bridges with PVD treatment. A limited edition of 10 pieces.

In a family, there’s always a rebel, a black sheep as some say. The Place Vendôme, among the three families of Czapek & Cie watches, is the most refined and complex. Launched in 2017 with two models in limited edition in platinum and red gold, the collection boasts a proprietary caliber with a ‘suspended’ tourbillon, a GMT function and the indication of day and night in the second time zone, as well as of the power reserve. At Baselword 2019, Czapek presented two new entries in the collection: a sumptuous version in platinum with a baguette-cut diamonds setting, ‘Etincelles’, and a sporty model in titanium with a black enamel ring, ‘Ombres’. Today, at the Geneva Watch Days, the exclusive high watchmaking event of 2020, the Geneva-based brand unveils the ‘bad boy’ of the Place Vendôme collection, called ‘Dark Matter’.

The newly born timepiece is not only inspired by the Ombres tourbillon in titanium, but takes elements from other watches in the Czapek portfolio. The 43.5mm case, in 5-grade titanium, features a black ADLC coating as the Faubourg de Cracovie ‘Courage every second’ chronograph – the unique piece donated by Czapek to the Only Watch charity event and auctioned off by Christies for 110’000 CHF on November 9th 2019.

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey unveil a new timepiece showcasing a large, high precision and inclined balance wheel within a 100 metres water resistant titanium case tailored for the most active lifestyle.

The two inventor watchmakers took up the challenge of fully – and visibly – combining sport and chronometry! The unique ovoid case with ergonomic profile and integrated lugs, provides optimal protection for the movement.

With this new calibre, the “Balancier S”, Greubel Forsey pursues the sporting adventure, pushing the technical limits to combine ergonomics, architecture and precision. A new flagship in aesthetics and performance, innovation and craftsmanship.

Balancier S

An avant-garde case

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have been creating innovative mechanisms since 2004. Invention and creativity being two fundamental strands woven into the DNA of Greubel Forsey, with this expertise they are continuing to explore new paths of case architecture and its integration with their movement constructions.

Late 2019, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey pioneered a new chapter with the GMT Sport – the totally new case architecture with sculptural lines combining ergonomics, robustness and comfort. Today, Greubel Forsey continues this approach, presenting a new interpretation of the unique case displaying its completely new movement. Circular from above, this case reveals the unique arched ovoid shape from other angles, features integrated lugs and strap, and a satin-finished bezel engraved with Greubel Forsey’s key values. The new “Balancier S” achieves a slim profile, reinforcing its dynamic new momentum.

Balancier S

The rubber crown and caseband with rubber inserts assure excellent grip and protection of the timepiece. The oval, arched sapphire crystal follows the curvature of the case. The perfect osmosis between the case and the movement is emphasized, technically and visually, by a daring double suspended arched bridge holding an inclined gear train and curved central hour and minute hands. These striking elements integrate and extend over the inclined balance wheel giving the timepiece its powerful identity, but also assuring its outstanding chronometric performance.

A focus on chronometry

The large inclined balance wheel at 7 o’clock stands out. Aiming above all to improve chronometry, it maximises the space offered by the arched case and sapphire crystal, inextricably linking form and function. In their relentless quest for precision and performance, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have already challenged chronometry, notably by reinventing the tourbillon mechanism with the Tourbillon 24 Secondes, Quadruple Tourbillon and the Double Tourbillon 30°.

They chose a new approach here, based on their large balance wheel unveiled in 2016. Entirely developed and made within the Greubel Forsey Atelier, this balance wheel is distinguished by its oversized 12.6mm diameter, ensuring excellent timekeeping performance.

To allow fine timekeeping adjustment of the moment of inertia, the balance wheel rim is fitted with six gold regulating screws, inset so as to limit air friction. In this new hand wound calibre, with several patents pending, the imposing Greubel Forsey balance wheel can be seen in an inclined construction for the very first time.

Balancier S

This 30° angle with respect to the horizontal plane of the movement proves to be an outstanding solution for limiting timing errors due to the effects of gravity on the regulating organ (balance wheel, spring and escapement) in stable positions. Combined with the large diameter of the balance wheel and the frequency of 21,600 vibrations/hour, it provides this timepiece with excellent chronometric performance – it’s also prominently visible in action due to the unique movement architecture.

A showcase of exceptional craftsmanship

With two coaxial barrels mounted in series, the 308- component movement has a 72-hour chronometric power reserve, indicated on a sector at 2 o’clock using an openworked red-tipped hand. The central hours and minutes display, with profiled and openworked polished steel hands, is completed by a small seconds hand on the inclined plane of the escapement at 8 o’clock, accentuating the depth and relief of this new calibre.

Following the Greubel Forsey creative spirit, technical and architectural innovation is accomplished with unconditional care and craftsmanship for all the components of the movement – whether these are visible through the sapphire crystal, the transparent caseback or hidden in the mechanical mysteries within.

This traditional and irreplaceable artisanal know-how is mastered in the Greubel Forsey Atelier – frosting, polished bevels and countersinks, circular and straight graining highlight even the smallest surfaces. The use of titanium for the mainplate and bridges proved much more difficult for manual hand-finishing than steel or even nickel silver and further increases the technical and aesthetic challenge that this timepiece represents

S for sport

The exceptional chronometry of this Greubel Forsey creation is combined with an unequivocally sporty case. Made of titanium and water resistant to 100 metres, its powerful case shape is distinguished by its lightness and comfort on the wrist. Its robustness protects the movement, in particular its large balance wheel, tested in the Greubel Forsey EWT Laboratory assuring its reliability and chronometric performance at all times. The flexible and resistant rubber strap reinforces the sporty dimension, with all the comfort of a titanium folding clasp.

With the “Balancier S”, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey take another step in their exploration of new technical and aesthetic horizons. Rarely has a timepiece with sport-orientated characteristics displayed such chronometric performance so visibly. Rarely has a watch with a sporting vocation presented such a degree of craftsmanship in movement and case. An exclusive alliance between creativity and performance, the Art of Invention, signed Greubel Forsey.

In this crowning expression of the ties binding H. Moser & Cie. and MB&F for more than ten years, Edouard Meylan and Maximilian Büsser have composed a duet recital in the form of an exceptional concerto for devotees of fine watchmaking. For the first time in its history, MB&F is contributing to a Performance Art endeavour flowing in both directions in an entirely reciprocal manner. Within this framework, the two Maisons are co-signing a pair of creations whose DNA blends the main characteristics of each. A story of friendship between two men against a backdrop of shared values, for the pleasure of building and sharing, and then of jointly presenting the results of this extraordinary project.

PROJECT ORIGINS

H. Moser & Cie. and MB&F are both independent, human-scale Swiss companies.

They are run by two passionate personalities, longstanding acquaintances who both appreciate and respect each other on both a personal and professional level.

The brands have in fact been working together for more than ten years, with Precision Engineering AG – a sister company of H. Moser & Cie. – notably supplying MB&F’s balance springs. It is therefore not surprising that MB&F asked Edouard Meylan to take part as a “friend” to help create a Performance Art Piece.

The latest aspect of this collaboration lies in its being a two-way street. Maximilian Büsser says: “When I called Edouard to tell him that I wanted to collaborate on a creation, I mentioned that I really liked the double balance-spring, the Moser fumé dials and the Concept watch series. Edouard immediately told me that he would let me borrow these features, but on condition that he could also reinterpret one of my machines. After an initial moment of surprise, I gave it some thought. Being 50% Indian and 50% Swiss, I am firmly convinced that mixing DNA creates interesting results, so why not try the experiment in watchmaking? I therefore agreed and suggested the FlyingT model, which is particularly dear to my heart.” In a spirit of sharing and openness, while cultivating the notion of strength in unity, H. Moser & Cie. and MB&F have thus jointly created two models, available in several versions and issued in 15-piece limited series.

This number is a nod to the 15th anniversary of MB&F as well as honouring the 15th anniversary of the relaunch of H. Moser & Cie. By pooling their strengths, these two competing yet friendly brands are working to harness the combined strengths of talented artisans, entirely in keeping with the philosophy adopted by MB&F.

LM101 MB&F X H. MOSER

The Legacy Machine 101 distils the very quintessence of mechanical watchmaking: the balance wheel, the power reserve and the passing of time. It is therefore no coincidence that MB&F has chosen to revisit this model – one of the purest and “simplest” in its collection – since it is indeed minimalism that guided the creation of the LM101 MB&F x H. Moser model. Like H. Moser & Cie. and the “back to basics” approach embodied in its Concept watch series, MB&F has chosen to remove its logo and return to its roots and indeed to the very origins of horology, when only the movements were signed. In the same understated spirit, it has abandoned the floating domed subdials to display the

hours and minutes as well as the 45-hour power reserve by means of hands placed directly on the main dial. The fumé dials borrowed from H. Moser & Cie. can thus be expressed in complete freedom, also enhanced by a refined bezel. Four fumé dials have been chosen for the LM101 MB&F x H. Moser: Red fumé, Cosmic Green fumé, Aqua Blue fumé and, of course, the famous Funky Blue fumé. Topped with a domed sapphire crystal, the case is made of steel, for only the third time in the history of MB&F.

The mesmerising large suspended balance wheel continues to take centre stage, albeit completely redesigned on the LM101 MB&F x H. Moser in order to highlight the beauty of the fumé dials. This beating heart, which represents the quintessence of watchmaking in the eyes of Maximilian Büsser, has been fitted with a double balance spring produced by Precision Engineering AG. Thanks to this pair of matching balance springs, the displacement of the point of gravity undergone by each spring as it expands is corrected, significantly improving precision and isochronism in a continuous quest for perfection. In addition, the paired balance springs also reduce the friction effect normally encountered with a single balance spring, resulting in optimised isochronism. Through the case back, the curved sapphire crystal reveals the ‘engine’ driving this timepiece. Unlike the base movement of the Legacy Machine 101, of which the finishes were determined by co-creator Kari Voutilainen, the aesthetics of the calibre that powers the LM101 MB&F x H. Moser is more contemporary, with a subtle NAC treatment to enhance its beauty.

ENDEAVOUR CYLINDRICAL TOURBILLON H. MOSER X MB&F

H. Moser & Cie. has borrowed from MB&F the concept of three-dimensional movements, a strong element of the Geneva Maison’s identity, protected by a sapphire dome and featuring a one-minute flying tourbillon that rises above the main dial through a ventricular opening appearing at 12 o’clock. Benefiting from the expertise of its sister company Precision Engineering AG, H. Moser & Cie. has equipped its tourbillon with a cylindrical balance spring, the same as that developed by Precision Engineering AG for MB&F’s LM Thunderdome. Invented in the 18th century, the cylindrical balance spring is reminiscent of a worm- or corkscrew, rising perpendicularly around the upper rod of the balance staff. Commonly used in historical marine chronometers at the time, it offers the advantage of developing concentrically, and therefore geometrically, since it works perfectly along the axis of its pivots. This gives it a significant advantage over the flat balance spring, whose opposite ends tend to exert forces on the pivots, despite the Philips or Breguet terminal curves which were specifically developed to partially correct the non-concentric opening of the balance spring. Fitted with a Breguet overcoil at both attachment points, the cylindrical balance spring reduces pivot friction and greatly improves isochronism. Due to its specific shape, the cylindrical balance spring is far more difficult to produce and takes ten times longer to make than a traditional balance spring.

Another reference to MB&F’s identity lies in the tilted dials, which H Moser & Cie. has adopted for its hour and minute subdials. These are inclined at 40° so that the owner of the watch is the only one to whom it reveals the secret of time, and mounted on a conical gear train ensuring optimal torque transmission from one plane to the other. As Edouard Meylan explains: “We have Moserized the MB&F universe by developing a sapphire subdial, which melts into the background so as to highlight the beauty of our fumé dials. And to preserve the purity and elegance of this true work of horological art, we have inscribed our logo like a watermark on the sapphire subdial, thereby underlining the personal character and intimate relationship binding it to its owner”.

Available in five different versions, the Endeavour Cylindrical Tourbillon H. Moser x MB&F model comes in a steel case topped by Funky Blue, Cosmic Green, Burgundy, Off-White or Ice Blue dials, all of the fumé variety

Zelos Watches has released their first halo watch model, named The Mirage. The Mirage represents the pinnacle of the company’s capabilities, and is a limited edition run of 10 pieces.

It exudes rarity and class, paying respects to the origins of Zelos, incorporating the spirit of engineering with exotic materials.

The Mirage is an accessible Swiss tourbillon, boasting many features far above its price tier.

The Mirage’s Key Features:

Movement

The Mirage features a customised Manufacture La Joux-Perret skeletonised tourbillon movement featuring a flying tourbillon.

A flying tourbillon is unlike a dual-supported tourbillon. Instead, it is cantilevered and supported only by one side. This feat of engineering requires higher quality standards due to the increased stresses on the support structure, but also provides more unobstructed views to showcase the tourbillon.

Another engineering accomplishment is the re-designed gear train. Typically situated directly below the tourbillon cage, it has instead been designed to fit alongside. This helps reduce the overall thickness of the movement to barely 9 millimeters, creating a sleeker profile.

The movement is fully decorated, complete with black PVD mainplates and a curved-grain pattern. Every edge and join has been finely beveled for an remarkable finishing, especially up close.

The movement boasts an impressive power reserve of 60 hours.

Crystals

A standard that you should expect with all Zelos watches, The Mirage features a high double domed front sapphire crystal for maximum visibility. The display caseback is also made of sapphire crystal, and both front and rear crystals have anti-reflective coatings applied to the underside.

The Mirage boasts an incredibly breathtaking “invisible” sapphire crystal dial. This creates a floating effect on the hands, indices, and brand logo, which seem to be levitating in the middle of the watch without supports of any kind.

A circular window has been cut with much precision to house the tourbillon movement. The complexity of this task, coupled with the extreme hardness and relative brittleness of sapphire crystal, results in a failure rate of over 50%, even when conducted by a master artisan.

Only sapphire crystal dials that have passed Zelos’ rigorous quality checks are used, ensuring the end product is nothing short of perfection.

The sapphire dial and the accompanying floating effect it produces is an optical phenomenon, reminiscent of the original Latin meaning of the word Mirage: To Look at, to wonder at.

Case Materials

Three case options are available:

Titanium (2 pcs)

This case material is exquisitely finished with alternating brushed and polished surfaces, providing depth and complexity. It is sleek and inconspicuous, creating an impeccable monochrome outfit for the wrist.

Timascus (5 pcs)

Timascus is titanium Damascus, boasting all the lightweight qualities of the original element but with a strength far greater.

This particular variant utilizes Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium, repeatedly folded and forged to obtain a wave-like woodgrain pattern.

It is extremely lightweight, is non-magnetic, and corrosion resistant. Timascus forging is a gorgeous fusion of old-world metalworking with modern day technology.

No other watch in the world has ever used Timascus as a material, to date. There are two colour variants of Timascus available for The Mirage.

The blue Timascus comprises of stunning blue and silver hues, appearing almost iridescent under certain lighting conditions, complementing the rich, steady cobla tblue.

The yellow Timascus has alternate streaks of pale sandy bronze coupled with a richer, darker yellow hue. It exudes a certain flamboyant warmth.

Mokume-gane (3 pcs)

Mokume-gane is an ancient Japanese metalworking technique that uses folded copper and nickel silver to produce a woodgrain pattern.

Our Mokume-gane variant utilizes copper and nickel silver to produce a woodgrain pattern.

A key difference Mokume-gane has compared to Timascus is that it will patina, with the copper portions eventually aging to a beautiful dark red, providing a contrast against the nickel silver.
