TWO OBSESSIONS. ONE PURSUIT: SPEED.
The parallels between the two brands go back to the earliest days of the automobile. In 1907, Leon Breitling introduced the Vitesse. French for “speed,” it was the first chronograph to measure speeds up to 250 miles or kilometers per hour. The device was so precise it was adopted by Swiss police to issue the first speeding tickets. A few years later in England, Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford were testing their hand-built vehicle in a defining race up a steep, chalky slope called Aston Hill. The car won, and the name endured.

In 1959, Aston Martin made its debut in Formula 1®. That same era saw drivers Graham Hill and Jim Clark—both aircraft pilots as well as F1® competitors—wearing Breitling Navitimers. Developed in 1952 as a wrist-worn cockpit instrument for aviators, the chronograph’s circular slide rule let pilots calculate speed, time intervals, and fuel consumption. Hill and Clark carried those functions from the sky to the circuit, turning the Navitimer into a trackside essential.

By the 1960s, both marques had become symbols of style and modern engineering. Willy Breitling, the founder’s grandson, shook off the austerity of postwar watchmaking with another watch, the Top Time, a chronograph made for a new generation of speed- and style-seekers. When it appeared on Sean Connery’s wrist in Thunderball (1965) as the first Q-modified gadget watch in the James Bond franchise, it became an emblem of the era. Aston Martin ’s iconic DB5, which made its debut in Goldfinger (1964) and returned in Thunderball, did the same on four wheels. Appearing together in the same film, they captured the cultural fascination with Bond’s world, where sophistication met speed and high-tech intrigue.

The first co-branded timepiece of the partnership puts the Navitimer back in the world of racing. Limited to 1,959 pieces, it pays tribute to the year of Aston Martin’s first foray into Formula 1®.

Every element of the Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team reflects performance: Aston Martin Racing Green and lime accents drawn from the Aston Martin Aramco livery, a lightweight titanium case – the first ever used on a Navitimer – and a carbon-fiber dial inspired by materials found in the cockpit of an F1® car. The textured leather strap recalls a racing harness, while enhanced nighttime visibility keeps the watch legible under any conditions.

The open sapphire-crystal caseback reveals the watch’s engine: the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, a COSC-certified chronometer with a 70-hour power reserve, built for absolute timing accuracy under pressure. Its matte-black rotor, developed specially for this edition, is made of tungsten coated with high-durability PVD (physical vapor deposition) and features the Aston Martin Formula One™ Team logo. The Navitimer rose to prominence alongside the golden age of civil aviation, even journeying into space on astronaut Scott Carpenter’s wrist in 1962. The blend of its function and distinctive look attracted not only professionals, but icons like Miles Davis, Serge Gainsbourg, Jim Clark, and Graham Hill.

This gold capsule includes three Navitimers. First, the Navitimer B01 Chronograph 41 comes with a brown dial, white subdials and distinctive circular slide rule, and case-matching red-gold logo, hands, and indexes. The 41 mm is the smallest diameter with the Manufacture Caliber 01 and is the size of the original from the 1950s. The white date disc fits into the symmetrical 6 o’clock subdial position and blends in perfectly with its color. As is typical for Breitling’s manufacture calibers, the caseback is open, showing the movement with the red gold skeletonized rotor with its Geneva stripes. The watch features a brown alligator strap and a red-gold folding clasp.

The Navitimer Automatic 36 comes in a green dial with a matching outer slide rule, making for a single-color dial. It’s powered by the time-only automatic Breitling Caliber 17. The midsize 36 mm case diameter hits a sweet spot for those who’d like a smaller watch with a sleek time-only layout. The watch is fitted to a dial-matching green alligator strap with a red gold tang-type buckle.

Navitimer 32 gold capsule
The Navitimer 32 comes in an all-brown dial, a matching outer slide rule and with subtle, elegant diamond hour markers. It’s the smallest of the three, and comes with a thermo-compensated SuperQuartz™ Breitling Caliber 77, enabling the slimmest case profile from the three at just 8 mm. Matching the dial, the strap comes in brown alligator with a red-gold tang-type buckle. In contrast to the classic knurled bezel of the chronograph, both time-only Navitimers come with the beaded bezel—reminiscent of the very first Navitimers of the 1950s.

Mounted onto the case is a light-brown alligator strap with a red-gold folding clasp.

Second is the Premier B09 Chronograph 40, with a dark green dial and red-gold hands and indexes. It comes in a more classically-sized 40 mm and a slimmer case thanks to the manually wound manufacture B09 caliber—perfect for accommodating a smaller wrist. As a manufacture caliber, the B09 is also visible through the display caseback and is seen in its full beauty with its rotor-less configuration. Strapped to the case is a dark-brown alligator strap with a red-gold folding clasp.

All five pieces have been produced in very low quantities and won’t be reproduced in this configuration. THE CHRONOMAT: BORN IN THE SKIES BUT FOR EVERY PURSUIT

The Chronomat’s story begins during the quartz crisis of the 1970s, when the traditional Swiss watchmaking industry was in upheaval due to the commercialization of precise and inexpensive quartz movements. One category of consumer remained loyal to mechanical chronographs, pilots. In 1983, Italy’s national aerobatics team, the Frecce Tricolori, partnered with Breitling to create a custom watch for its members that would be tough enough for the cockpit but elegant enough to be worn off duty.

The Chronomat, the all-purpose sports watch that emerged from this intense collaboration, did just that while introducing the elements that would become its trademarks: four raised rider tabs at the 15-minute marks to protect the crystal, and a steel rouleaux bracelet designed for comfort and durable wear. The Frecce Tricolori watch caused a sensation when it launched and, a year later, it was released to the public as the Chronomat. It was a defining moment in watchmaking that signaled an end to the quartz crisis and a return of the mechanical timepiece. Fast-forward to today, and this watch remains a serious style statement.

Both models showcase meteorite dials-meaning no two watches are alike. Haaland was deeply involved in the design, from selecting the Chronomat to choosing the cosmic dial and case metals.’ “I wanted something one of a kind,” says Haaland. “The Chronomat just clicked. It’s clean, all metal or with a rubber strap – it lets you go bold with the dial. And the meteorite makes each one different. You’re never going to see the same watch on someone else’s wrist.”

The Chronomat: An icon with cosmic detail

First introduced in 1983, the Chronomat was Breitling’s return to mechanical chronographs at a time when quartz ruled the wrist. Inspired by a watch created for the Italian aerial squadron, Frecce Tricolori, the Chronomat brought robust proportions, a rotating bezel with four rider tabs, and the instantly recognizable rouleaux bracelet. Both Haaland Signature editions stay true to that spirit of technical mastery and visual impact. The Chronomat Automatic GMT 40 Erling Haaland features a meteorite dial set in a stainless-steel case with a platinum bezel, accented by a red-gold GMT hand and Haaland’s initials on the central seconds hand. The caseback is engraved “ONE OF 500” and “ERLING HAALAND 9” surrounding an engraving of Haaland in his signature goal-celebration pose. The watch pairs with either a classic steel rouleaux bracelet or a black rouleaux-style rubber strap.

The Chronomat B01 42 Erling Haaland ramps things up with an 18k red-gold case, meteorite dial, and black chronograph subdials. Inside, the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 offers a 70-hour power reserve, visible through a sapphire-crystal caseback engraved with “ONE OF 250” and again Haaland’s number 9. It also includes Haaland’s initials on the central chronograph seconds hand and is offered on either black rubber or 18k red-gold rouleaux. Rounding out the collection is a super-exclusive “ONE OF 5” edition created for Haaland and his circle.

Crafted in 18k red gold, it features the meteorite dial, a transparent caseback revealing the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 movement, and bespoke case-side engraving of his name and jersey number. The caseback also displays an image of Haaland in his goal-celebration Lotus pose. A private tribute to his meteoric rise, this reference won’t be made available to the public. All models come in a wooden box, completed with a signed thank-you note from Haaland, underscoring the personal nature of the collaboration.

Forged in the heart of a dying star over 4.5 billion years ago, the Muonionalusta meteorite is one of the oldest materials ever discovered on Earth. Having landed almost one million years ago on Earth, it’s composed primarily of iron and nickel, and also contains trace elements like cobalt and rare silicates not commonly found in terrestrial rocks. Some fragments even hold stishovite, a high-pressure mineral formed during cosmic impacts, almost never seen on Earth. Scattered across the glacial moraines of northern Sweden, fragments of Muonionalusta are uncovered through careful exploration in a remote, icy landscape.

Each discovery is rare; each piece, from a finite source. Once extracted, the meteorite is sliced and treated to reveal its Widmanstätten pattern—a naturally occurring crystalline structure that forms only during incredibly slow cooling in the vacuum of space. The result is a pattern of interlaced bands, visible to the naked eye and impossible to replicate— a raw relic of the early solar system, preserved in time. Each dial is individually crafted and precisely adapted to fit the case, working seamlessly with applied indexes and hands. It’s the first time Breitling has used this material, and the result is nothing short of stellar.

This refresh takes everything that made the Superocean Heritage distinctive and makes it even sharper. The automatic models, in 44 mm, 42 mm, and 40 mm introduce the B31 movement, Breitling’s first exclusive three-hand manufacture caliber, newly launched in March. A further 36 mm houses the Caliber 10 automatic movement.

The collection’s color palette has been streamlined to a core of black, blue, and green, paired with a matching ceramic-inlayed bezel for next-level scratch resistance that will keep the watch looking new long into the future. Thinner, more integrated mesh-metal and mesh-rubber bracelets ensure a watertight fit against the case, complete with folding clasps for a seamless finish.

Other refinements enhance symmetry and proportion. On May 24, 1962, Scott Carpenter orbited the Earth three times as part of NASA’s Mercury-Atlas 7 mission—becoming only the second American to do so. On his wrist: a one-of-a-kind Navitimer, custom-built by Breitling for space.

Its chronograph and signature slide rule had made it an indispensable tool in the cockpit. But space called for something different. Prior to his mission, Carpenter wrote to Breitling asking for a custom Navitimer with a few special modifications: a wider bezel for use with gloved hands, a stretch-metal bracelet to fit over his space suit, and, most famously—a 24-hour dial. In orbit, where the sun rises and sets every 90 minutes, this 24-hour display would keep him grounded in time.

It was a challenge that third-generation founder Willy Breitling couldn’t refuse. The result was the Navitimer Cosmonaute. Delivered just days before lift-off, it became the first Swiss wristwatch in space.

Now, six decades later, Breitling honors that era-defining journey—and the man behind it—with a platinum tribute to one of the great names in space exploration.

The new Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary celebrates 100 years since the late astronaut’s birth on May 1, 1925. The deep blue dial evokes the color of Earth as seen from space—vivid, saturated, and unforgettable—while the crisp white slide rule recalls its swirling cloud cover. That same blue carries through to the matching alligator-leather strap, secured with a white-gold folding buckle. Limited to just 50 pieces, this edition is the ultimate tribute to Carpenter and his historic Mercury-Atlas 7 mission.

THE CENTENARY COSMONAUTE

The Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary is powered by the Breitling Manufacture Caliber B02, a manual chronograph with a 24-hour display. The hand-wound movement isn’t just a tribute to the original—it also performs where automatics may falter. Not essential for most, but reassuring if the next trip involves zero gravity.

The COSC-certified movement offers approximately 70 hours of power reserve and is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. Unique bridge engravings commemorate Carpenter with the inscriptions “Carpenter,” his capsule “Aurora 7,” “3 orbits around the Earth,” and the name of NASA’s first astronaut group “Mercury 7.” Additional caseback engravings read “First Swiss wristwatch in space,” “One of 50,” and “Scott Carpenter Centenary 1925-2025.”

At 12 o’clock, the dial bears the winged logo of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA)—highlighting the Navitimer’s historic role as the official watch of the world’s largest pilots’ club since its development in 1952. The watch features three subdials for running seconds, chronograph minutes, and hours, along with a discreet date window at 6 o’clock. Mushroom pushers ensure smooth operation, while a bright red chronograph seconds hand enhances legibility when measuring elapsed times.

The timepiece is presented in a luxurious wooden box, with the interior marked “First Swiss wristwatch in space. May 24th, 1962.” Accompanying the display is a replica of Carpenter’s Mercury 7 name badge.

CUSTOM-MADE FOR CARPENTER

The original Cosmonaute was damaged upon splashdown. After landing 250 nautical miles (460 km) off course in the Atlantic, Carpenter spent three hours in a life raft awaiting rescue. During that time, salt water corroded the dial.

Willy Breitling replaced the watch, and the original remained in the brand’s archives—untouched and unseen—until 2022, when it made its first public appearance for the 60th anniversary of Carpenter’s mission. It was later displayed at Breitling’s Then & Now pop-up museum in Zurich as part of the brand’s 140th anniversary. Fittingly, the corrosion on the dial has taken on the appearance of a distant planetary surface.

To celebrate the new limited edition and the final week of Breitling’s 140th-anniversary pop-up museum, a special event was held on site. There, Willy Breitling’s son Gregory—who had been just a boy when the Cosmonaute was created—shared the story. His recollections offered a rare glimpse into the decision-making, creativity, and sheer speed with which his father responded to Scott Carpenter’s request.

Though damaged, that original endures as a powerful artifact from the dawn of space exploration and a bold new direction in Swiss watchmaking. With the new centenary edition, Breitling revives a pioneering timepiece, while inviting a new generation to rediscover the spirit of adventure that carried Scott Carpenter into orbit, and into history.

ADVENTURE, LONG-DISTANCE TRAVEL, AND EXPLORATION
Gallet was founded by Julien Gallet in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1826. Historically, the brand has embodied the spirit of adventure and long-distance travel, producing robust timekeeping instruments for racing, aviation, and off-road expeditions – a heritage that aligns with Breitling’s own chronograph DNA.

In 1856, Gallet expanded into the U.S. market, with Jules Racine & Co. in 1890 becoming the sole distributor of Gallet watches in North America, the brand’s main market.

Gallet contributed to ushering in the dawn of the aviation age by creating a stopwatch that timed the first powered flight in 1903. Piloted by Wilbur and Orville Wright, the groundbreaking Kitty Hawk Flyer covered 852 feet in just 59 seconds. The timepiece marketed as “The Sun” forever cemented Gallet’s place in aviation history.

In 1907, Gallet acquired the watch manufacturer Société d’Horlogerie Electa, establishing the “Fabrique d’Horlogerie Electa, Gallet & Co.” From the time of the acquisition until 1926 marked a period of technical innovation, patents, and international recognition that laid the foundation for Gallet’s future as a leading brand in precision timekeeping.

Afterward, Gallet continued to focus on its well-established U.S. market, primarily functioning as an établisseur – designing watches while coordinating their manufacturing and assembly in Switzerland.

When the Swiss watch industry was hit by the quartz crisis and a soaring Swiss franc in the 1970s and ’80s, Gallet, like many great names, fell quiet. Now, under the Breitling banner, it is poised for a long-awaited revival.

PROFESSIONAL TIMEKEEPERS
Among Gallet’s many renowned timepieces, two standouts became essentials for travel, sport, and industry. First, the 1939 Flying Officer was a pioneering waterproof chronograph designed for multi-timezone tracking. This groundbreaking tool became an essential companion for pilots and passengers in the early days of intercontinental flight, when multiple overnight refuelingstops were required for journeys that lasted multiple days.

Even President Harry S. Truman, renowned for his steadfast leadership, embraced Gallet’s precision with the Flying Officer timepiece. The watch, bearing the inscription “Col. Truman From Vic Paul”, was a Christmas gift he was known to wear regularly and which he described as “the most elaborate wristwatch I ever saw.” Today, it remains one of the most sought-after vintage Gallet timepieces among collectors, celebrated for its historical significance.

Equally significant was the MultiChron Clamshell, introduced in 1938 – one of the first waterproof chronographs, designed to withstand dust, humidity, and heavy rains. With various iterations tailored for motor racing, speed boating, aviation, and other sports, the MultiChron series became a cornerstone of Gallet’s legacy.

The line also included the MultiChron Regulator, which U.S. legend Rex Mays received in 1940 after clinching victory at the Springfield Mile, a famous flat track auto racing championship. The prize underlines Gallet’s relevance in motor sport and prowess under pressure. The MultiChron Regulator captured the precision and relentless drive that defined both Mays and the highoctane world of motorsport.

Now, with Breitling at the helm, Gallet’s history will not only be preserved, but given new life. This acquisition continues Breitling’s commitment to shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking while honoring its past. Founded in 1884, Breitling is marking its anniversary with a yearlong celebration of its “140 Years of Firsts.” Now, there’s a new addition to that roster of pioneering achievements: the Caliber B19, Breitling’s first perpetual calendar chronograph movement. The new caliber makes its debut in three limited-edition 140th-anniversary pieces representing Breitling’s icons: the Premier, Navitimer, and Chronomat.

“The Premier, the Navitimer, and the Chronomat are the most impactful collections in Breitling’s history,” says Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling. “We couldn’t single one out to showcase the new Caliber B19 for our anniversary—it had to be all three.”

Before delving into the details, here are some of the Breitling firsts that lead to this moment:
• 1884: Founder Leon Breitling established a business centered on measuring time, speed, heartrates, sound, and just about everything that could be clocked with a pocket chronograph.
• 1915: His son, Gaston, launched the first wrist-worn chronograph with an independent pusher at two o’clock that could start, stop, and reset the chronograph seconds, independent of the crown—a significant advancement in user control.
• 1934: Leon’s grandson, Willy Breitling, patented a watch with a second independent pusher at 4 o’clock, establishing the form of the modern chronograph still used across all of watchmaking today.
• 1969: Breitling co-developed the first automatic chronograph caliber to reach the market —a breakthrough that solved the watchmaking challenge of its era: how to combine a chronograph with an automatic movement.
• 2009: Breitling released its first in-house-developed movement, the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, widely recognized as the gold-standard chronograph caliber.

Breitling’s three “One of 140”-piece limited-edition timepieces add a new first to this legacy: the Caliber B19, fully designed and assembled at the Breitling Chronometrie.

The Caliber B19: a new benchmark
Breitling is one of only a handful of independent watch companies producing its own manufacture movements. It began in 2009 with the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 and continued with a progression of chronograph calibers: the B02 with 24-hour function, the B03 with split-seconds, and the B04 with GMT. Many more innovations followed. The new Caliber B19 is the brand’s first exclusive perpetual calendar movement, and naturally, it is also a chronograph—Breitling’s specialty from the beginning. It features a full calendar and moonphase, automatically correcting for leap years and months of 28,30, and 31 days, so it can run for nearly a century without a major adjustment. What’s more, it has a remarkable power reserve of approximately 96 hours.

The movement ’s solid-gold rotor is decorated with an engraving of Breitling’s historic Montbrillant Manufactory at 3 rue de Montbrillant in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Montbrillant was more than a factory: Its west wing was a villa-style home that housed three generations of the Breitling family. The Montbrillant building, which served as Breitling’s manufacture for more than 80 years, had pride of place in company advertisements. Its name even appeared on watch dials in the 1930s and ’40s.

Celebrating tradition: Breitling’s 140th-anniversary editions
Premier B19 Datora 42 140th Anniversary: The Premier made its debut in 1943 as the watch that took the chronograph out of the cockpit and into society. It was the gentleman’s chronograph, a symbol of good taste that also happened to be a highly functional tool watch. The anniversary edition in solid 18 k red gold retains the Premier’s distinctive Arabic numerals, contrasting minutes scale, and signature square pushers. The strap is black alligator leather with elegant tone-on-tone topstitching and an 18 k gold folding buckle.

Navitimer B19 Chronograph 43 Perpetual Calendar 140th Anniversary: The Navitimer was the first watch for pilots to combine a chronograph with the brand’s proprietary wrist-worn circular slide rule. Originally developed in 1952 for members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the Navitimer quickly found favor with a broader audience that included celebrities and astronauts—in 1962 it became the first Swiss wristwatch in space. The anniversary edition features the famous slide rule in black on an attention-grabbing 18 k red-gold dial. The strap is alligator leather with contrasting topstitching and an 18 k gold folding buckle.
Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar 140th Anniversary: The Chronomat first launched in 1983 as the official watch of Italy’s aerobatics team, the Frecce Tricolori. The popularity of its design led to a wider release a year later. This quartz-era timing was significant—the Chronomat was instrumental in restoring the popularity of mechanical chronographs. The anniversary edition features the model’s distinctive design with four raised rider tabs at the 15-minute marks, an “onion” crown, and a rubber version of the model’s classic Rouleaux bracelet. Ceramic inserts give it a supercharged look. Plus, it marks another first for Breitling: a dramatic skeletonized dial.

Each anniversary limited-edition is presented with a sumptuous suede-lined wooden watch box that can be configured to display up to three timepieces. Additional features include a drawer for storage and a removable travel pouch. The interactive Then & Now pop-up museum focuses on Breitling’s considerable history as the brand celebrates 140 years of firsts. Long-time brand ambassador, Swiss explorer, and climate advocate Bertrand Piccard and Gregory Breitling, son of Willy Breitling, the last member of the Breitling family to head the company, were present for the official opening in Zurich on August 28.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF UNIVERSAL GENÈVE

1920s: “Precision watches, precision jewelry” – Universal Genève’s early history featured elegant women’s cocktail watches and innovative men’s jewelry timepieces, including the reversible Cabriolet, one of the first of its kind.

1940s: “Accurate time… plus” – The brand was at the forefront of chrono graph innovation, offering an impressive variety of its Compax chrono graphs with manufacture movements, along with the legendary Tri-Compax full calendar launched to celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary.

Style and Speed

The Top Time Collection was introduced in the 1960s to meet the demands of people with active lifestyles. Third-generation founder Willy Breitling wanted to create an unconventional chronograph that was more style driven than the traditional tool watches Breitling was known for. He called it the Top Time, and it was as much about having a good time as it was about telling the time, becoming a fast favorite among car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Over the years, Breitling has partnered with American classic sports car makers to capture the sense of verve and energy that characterized the 1960s. Today’s Top Time Classic Cars Collection consists of updated collaborations with Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, and Shelby Cobra.

The design is modern retro, with mushroom chronograph pushers and an up/down dial design with the tourbillon carriage at 12 o’clock. At 6 o’clock, the chronograph minute counter occupies a “squircle” (part circle, part square) register that’s a nod to vintage dashboard gauges. A tachymeter scale circles the outer dial.

Meet the Classic Cars

The Top Time B21 Ford Mustang has a 43-mm bronze case with a titanium back, and a green dial to match the colors of the first-generation Ford Mustang, produced from 1964 to 1974. It was a car that truly captured the freewheeling spirit of the ’60s.

The Top Time B21 Shelby Cobra has a 44-mm black ceramic case with a titanium back, crown, pushers, and buckle. The blue dial matches the livery of the car, created in 1962 by Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby, who combined a small, light, British-style chassis with a strong, reliable American small-block engine.

The Top Time B21 Chevrolet Corvette has a 44-mm black ceramic case with a titanium back, crown, pushers, and buckle. The walnut burl dial and perforated leather racing strap are a homage to the steering wheel and dashboard inlays of the legendary 1960s “Sting Ray” Chevy Corvette.

Breitling worked with the specialty movement maker Manufacture La Joux-Perret to develop the B21. Running at a frequency of 28,800 a/h (4 hertz), with a power reserve of 55 hours, the Breitling Caliber B21 has a column-wheel-controlled design with a horizontal clutch. It is a COSC-certified chronometer with a skeletonized oscillating weight that allows a view of the column wheel through the caseback. The tourbillon houses the balance wheel, balance spring, and escapement in a rotating cage, setting the entire assembly in perpetual motion—and effectively cancels—the pull of gravity, which affects the watch’s accuracy in different positions. The Top Time B21 Classic Cars Chronograph Tourbillon is water-resistant to 100 meters, and comes with Breitling’s 5-year warranty. In other words, all the style, power, and performance you would expect from a classic.

I know usually people decide to take on running step by step and go for half marathons then marathons and maybe maybe an ultra; I usually do things the other way around.. crazy huh!!! well you either aim for the toughest races in the world or just don’t do it. My aim from the start was the Marathons Des Sables 2020.

This is where my journey started and from there I built a plan to get there including participating in several ultra races building up to 250km.

26 September 2019 was the date I took on the most challenging race of my life in all its aspects: The Half Marathons Des Sables Fuerteventura – 120KM in 4 days with a day break. Just to keep things in perspective; I was training with Marcus and the inner fight team since may, with a long break in august that brought my confidence down tremendously because of my irregular training patterns for over a month away from home.

Anyways back to HMDS final preparations as they were quiet exciting and stressful; imagine this – I am back in Dubai just 20 days before the biggest race of my “athletic life” and here I am with no backpack , no idea what food to take, what clothes to wear and how am I surviving 4 days in the desert on my own – totally self sufficient.

On top of that, all the necessary material and food to survive such ultra races are not readily available in Dubai and need to bought online and shipped home on time before the race for testing – another level of stress!!!

I was able to get my official backpack and my food 5 days before traveling to Spain which left me with only one practice day with my backpack on. I filled it up to 5kg and I decided to run in Al Qudra to get a feel of how it would be when I m running HMDS. Frankly, I was OK with the backpack , but I chose some favorable conditions in the training terrain which I ll pay for later in the race…(more later).

The flight from Barcelona to Fuerteventura was a very interesting one – almost 80% of the people on the plane were participants wearing already their races backpacks – all yellow and black ,almost everyone had the official WAA race kit which started to stress me out – they all looked well prepared, confident  and ready. As if they have all been there before – my eyes were rolling left, right looking at every single detail on each backpack and trying to compare them with mine – the more I looked the more I felt I don’t have the right equipment with me and I am going to fail.

They were all in groups of 2 to 5 at least , chatting , excited, hyper… and here I am , totally by myself checking whether I have forgotten something at home that would make or break that race.

The checking In at the Playitas hotel was the first official interaction I had with the race organizers and also the reality check that this is really happening in less than 24hours. I submitted my medical certificate, checked my equipment checklist with the team and received my first 2L water bottles that will last me until the first check point the next day.

Day 1 starting time was quiet late frankly; the official race started at 12:00 after a long breakfast , a longer drive to the starting line and then a walk down to the official start. Mid day. temperature as high as 24 degrees – which is not an issue for me – this is winter in Dubai 🙂 ..but for many it seemed an agony coming from all around Europe and America.

Our first day was a 30.4KM run up the mountains first and then down to the beach where we had to cross a long 10km path on the smooth sand until we reached the next mountain climb to finish our last 10km on mixed terrain of sand and grovel.

Remember I told you before I ll pay the price for taking it easy on my training with my backpack – well that’s exactly what happened to me on the beach run – I couldn’t make a proper step for the entire 10kms stretch – I had to walk it all!!! Nightmare!! I felt that I am not moving at all .. I can usually do a 10k in less than an hour and it took me around 2 to finish that strip.

My only concern during the entire time was not to be last – I kept looking behind me to see if there was a  good bunch behind and luckily there was. But I kept being surpassed by the same people over and over again – its like I take a few steps ahead of them , then slow down, they take over .. then they slow down .. so on and so forth … definitely not your top 3 runners tale here 🙂 more like survival mode until the first finish line.

Remember how Marcus described “the rookie runners” with the fallen sleeping bags dangling from the backpack and swinging from one side to the other – well that was me again between two CPs.. for some reason my mattress was not hooked properly and kept swinging on my back from one side to the other irritating me and distracting my run until I reached the next Check Point (CP) and discovered the power of my backpack.. it actually has so many useful laces that could hold my mattress firm enough closer to my neck without annoying me … hoorahhh!! I made a breakthrough this day!

Reaching the Bivouac for the first time was the happiest I felt for days!!! they gave me my tent number and a 5L water bottle that need to last me until the next day’s CP..This was for cooking tonight, drinking , and filling up for the next day’s first 10km.

Now guess what!!! I don’t know how to cook,  not even how to make a fire – yes back to basics here. My tent mates were not here yet and as we were grouped in 5, I was the first to arrive and very hungry.  It was very windy and I kept looking at the other runners struggling to make fire for their own cooking, so I made the decision to use my water as is ( fair temperature) and just poor it on top of my dry food in my stove and eat it as is. Disgusting!!!! My food was crunchy, cold and tasteless.. but whatever, I wanted to have my dinner asap and just get on with it – for the people who know me very well – Yes I know you are wondering : who is this ? is that Hassan? the guy who eats at Zuma and La Petite Maison!! is that for real?… well guys when survival mode is calling you, you drop your standards to zero and start from there!

My tent mates arrived and one of them; Polish, was our savior; he had a magic torch and was able in few seconds to light up the fire and start cooking . At that moment,  I had already a bit of rest and my feet were OK so i decided to indulge in the luxury of having a cup of coffee.  It was probably the most appreciated coffee I have had in ages. Made my day!!!!

Usually in those types of ultra marathons , you always have a “Long day” that everyone fears. This was the next morning for us.. 54.5Km on all kinds of terrains and elevations

Our start was planned at 6am sharp – nothing should be left in the tent -all packed and in our backpacks; otherwise we get penalized. My watch sleep reading was 4h30 only!!

This was the big day for me – if I can make it through , I own this race – I just needed to survive the pain and keep going no matter what. Luckily the start was on a downhill – this is great for me as I crush it usually when running down, I capitalize the most to gain speed and finish off as much terrain as I can without much effort.

1,2..4… this was  my count while running down the hill reaching the beach side.. I was hyped, finishing off almost 5km in no time and passing by so many runners – frankly, it was a great start and gave me the right moral push I needed for the day – the scenery we had up until 30Km was mesmerizing , I even slowed down just because I wanted to enjoy the beach scenery with the rocky terrain we were running on.

The pain started once we reached the very long path, very dry and endless – it was in between two large hills, similar to a valley with loads of rocks and stones.. I was looking around me and there were less runners around – I started thinking was I too fast or too slow ? where is everyone? I saw a few runners next to me mostly walking at that point; so was I .. the pain was getting stronger and stronger and the temperature kept rising , it was mid day , very hot, and I almost drank all my water.

Here is where my mental game kicked in; I m only half way from the finish line, I don’t have enough water to suffice me until my next check point which was still 8km away and my feet are killing me… what do I do now? I looked around me and I saw an older runner, probably in his sixties, running a bit , walking a bit and leaning to a tree every now and then to catch his breadth… but the look and determination in his eyes were just inspirational… you could tell, he is not going to stop and he will keep going until he reaches the end even if this kept going on for another 10 hours.

Bare in mind , I have never ran beyond the 35KM that I have reached at that time and I am navigating in a whole new space now … Everything I do from this point onward is totally new for me and what was more challenging was the fact that the big uphill ascend was just a few kilometers away closer to the 42km mark.  I stopped running, the closest nutrition I had up the grab was a GU candy and I had only 600ml of water left.

Well the first thing that actually got me going was guilt and the fact that many contestants that were still running are actually older than me and I always felt that my body was fit enough to endure such sufferance. All that pain was just an illusion in my mind  – the only way to get ride of it is actually to embrace it, accept it and make it my own – can’t let a few blisters and foot pain control my faith and the competition – I came for one purpose and one Only – I want that finishers medal 🙂 .. and I am not going home without it.

10 hours down the road, I found myself walking with 2 Belgians , chit chatting about our lives and looking at the flags around the entrance of our Bivouac… it was there , our salvation, the end of the toughest day in the race!! What a joy to reach the tent during day light and among the first 150 contestants.

We had a full day to rest and I definitely needed it – the main reason was , after that 54KM run, I have developed a huge blister at the bottom of my left feet and needed to get it taken care of by the Meds. I tried to handle it myself in my tent at first but I believe i made it worse as I cut it too fast instead of letting the wound be cleaned up and disinfected first.

The Medical staff proposed to teach us how to use the syringe and inject ourselves – frankly couldn’t even look at the tip of the syringe to attempt to stick it in my own foot!!!! Too many things to handle while exhausted from the run… some pampering from the nurses was not too much to ask I guess 🙂

Oh I forgot to mention the flirting I had from the wonderful ladies at the check points everytime they used to fill my water bottles. Basically , i used to remove my sunglasses and cap to poor some water on my head and cool myself and I used to get beautiful smiles and some Spanish flirtiness about my eyes ” ojos guapo..” silly huh!!!! well it kept me going and lifted my moral everytime …don’t judge!!! you will see when your turn comes how these small gestures help a lot!!

The off day was quiet chill: Yoga, a good sleep, chatting and taking some photos around and an early night sleep in preparation for the final day.

Day 4 and last – energy levels were very high; a lot of excitement and also restlessness to reach the finish line and complete this wonderful HMDS. The first 15Km of the path were fairly easy and mostly downhill or flat until we reached the 2  mountains that separate us from the finish line on the Playitas beach.

The first ascent was brutal and extremely long, it just felt like it will never end and also it was a kind of a ridge on the top which made the descend towards the second hill quiet technical specially that many of us were running behind each other and some more excited and pushy than others.

I Had to give way several times to runners behind me just because I didn’t want to break a leg sliding on those rocks in a tiny path going downhill. I wanted to make it in one piece back at the hotel with zero injuries.

The only thing that broke my moral was the fact that once we went down from the first peak, the second one was not as small as they told us and it actually took the same amount of effort to climb it up before seeing the final flags of the finish line – I admit at that point, I was so pissed and swearing all the way up as I felt betrayed and misinformed.

But as always, i sucked it up and kept going – it was only 2km away from the end and nothing would stop me now from this finish line. That last descent was just amazing; downhill, people cheering up and all I was thinking of was a good shower, a burger and a cold coke ( which on normal days, I would never drink). There is something about craving a Coca Cola after every race – I never understood it, as I never drink coke in any normal day.

Now unfortunately, I didn’t have anyone waiting for me at the finish line to take a picture while I crossed it ,so I need to wait until the official pictures are released and pray that the organizers have not forgotten me :)… but as you can see I am always prepared with my Breitling SuperOcean on my wrist to take my favourite wrist shots.

Overall, this experience opened my eyes on some many dimensions and made me think about life goals and priorities but also how strong and supportive human interaction and bonding is in such tough conditions. Human beings living a simple and a quiet basic life are much closer to each other and more supportive to their peers compared to our current daily sophisticated lives.
