Panerai unveils the new Luminor Perpetual Calendar GMT Platinumtech PAM01575 at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025

As luminescent as the Luminor. The name Luminor originates from the luminous compound created by Panerai, an innovative material that shaped the creation of the first models in the early 1960s. Invented to meet the demanding standards of the Italian Navy, Panerai had long been supplying robust and precise instruments to the Marina Militare, but it was the Luminor that brought together a collection of distinctive features in ‘90s.

Among these, the crown protective device with lever – originally designed to prevent water seepage from entering the case – stands out as the most emblematic and instantly recognizable element until today. Every element served a purpose, balancing form and function, maximizing reliability, readability and resilience, in a way that would come to define Panerai’s watchmaking tenet. By the 1960s, these characteristics had consolidated into a design that, with its safety lock system – along with the sandwich dial and enhanced luminescence – set the Luminor apart and became synonymous with the Maison.

In 1993, Panerai introduced Luminor ref. 5218-201/A together with Luminor Marina Militare ref. 5218-202/A and Mare Nostrum ref. 5218-301/A to the civilian public for the first time.

Debuting aboard the Italian navy cruiser Durand De la Penne, a launch ceremony was held on September 10th in the La Spezia military harbor and attended by Duke Amedeo D’Aosta. With its distinctive aesthetic, bold size, and departure from precious materials, the Luminor disrupted conventional watch design and set a new standard for rugged elegance.

Today, Luminor is Panerai’s most recognizable collection, an enduring functional design that has evolved through the Maison’s Laboratorio di Idee. From high complications to innovative materials, the Luminor remains a platform for innovation—forever timeless, yet continuously advancing in performance.

The new Luminor Perpetual Calendar GMT Platinumtech PAM01575
Panerai’s finest materials, innovative mechanics, and timeless design come together in the new Luminor Perpetual Calendar GMT Platinumtech PAM01575, expanding the Maison’s high-end range for collectors and aficionados.

“The Luminor Perpetual Calendar represents Panerai’s dedication to advancing both function and form. The timepiece incorporates the recognizable design elements of the Maison’s most emblematic collection with the watchmaking complexity of the perpetual calendar and preciousness of Panerai PlatinumtechTM. With a sapphire dial that reveals the calibre intricacies and functions, the new Luminor provides wearers with a deeper connection to the art of timekeeping. This watch embodies our commitment to creating not only a tool for precision but a piece of elegance that reflects Panerai’s legacy of technical innovation and functional design”, says Panerai’s COO Jérôme Cavadini.

Crafted from Panerai Platinumtech™, a special alloy made with 95% pure platinum, the 44mm case boasts a 40% increase in hardness than standard platinum due to a distinctive treatment process. Providing a higher scratch resistance than standard platinum, this material weighs 33% more than 18-carat gold, giving it a notable heft. Complementing this robust case are the emblematic crown-protecting device and a striking blue sapphire crystal dial, which offers a transparent window into the watch’s day and date disks, adding visual intrigue while maintaining clarity. The rich blue tone, contrasting with luminescent applied indexes and hands, evokes Panerai’s maritime heritage, reminiscent of deep ocean waters. The watch’s aesthetic is enhanced with Super-LumiNova® X2 on the hour, minute and small-second hands and markers that provide a vivid green glow in the dark, an improved grade that ensures a luminosity more efficient than its predecessor. For legibility, information is displayed on both sides of the movement, resulting in a clearer, more streamlined dial.

When it comes to high-complications, Panerai stands out for its commitment to merging innovation and simplicity of usage. The dial is restrained, with only the most essential indications—hours, minutes, day, date, 12-hour GMT hand, a 24-hour GMT sub-dial at 9 o’clock, small seconds, and a day-night indicator—preserving the clarity and readability for which Panerai is renowned. Through the sapphire case back, elements such as month, year, and leap year, are visible offering a rare window into the developed technicity of the P.4100 movement. The sole outward reference to the intricate complexity within is the inscription “Calendario Perpetuo,” an homage to both the watch’s perpetual calendar complication and Panerai’s Italian heritage.

Panerai’s P.4100 calibre, an automatic mechanical movement, is the result of research and development that spanned over ten years by Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee. Featuring a three-day power reserve, the energy is stored in two barrels with a gold off-centered microrotor that winds the movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), to ensure precision and reliability in timekeeping. The off-centered position of the micro-rotor allows for more space to display all the information – with just 15 ½ lignes (35.1 mm) in diameter and 7mm in thickness. A true timekeeping companion, the P.4100 caliber features a disc that, as it rotates, allows, the date to be calculated up to 2399 without the need to change any part within the movement. At the end of each century, it will only require the intervention of a watchmaker to perform a maneuver to disassemble the movement bridge and rotate the hundreds disc by 90°, thus allowing the watch to continue calculating the years.

One of its standout innovations is the intuitive adjustment system, which allows the wearer to modify the day, date, month, and leap year settings using only the crown. This design enables smooth adjustments both forward and backward without restrictions, even around sensitive transition periods such as midnight or month-end. This user-friendly approach eliminates the need for complex tools and reduces the risk of mishandling—a notable departure from traditional perpetual calendars that often require professional expertise to adjust. The movement also features Panerai’s patented date shock protection system to stabilize the date disk, ensuring accuracy and resilience against everyday wear. Traditional perpetual calendars are prone to misalignment if subjected to sudden impacts, as a jolt can shift the date mechanism, necessitating manual correction. This system also reduces the need for frequent servicing, enhancing the watch’s durability.

Another patented system is the specially designed GMT spring with a distinctive geometry to distribute pressure across multiple contact points. This innovation reduces wear and tear, prevents premature fatigue, and ensures smoother transitions for the GMT hand. By enhancing the reliability of the dual-time function, Panerai provides dependable tracking of a second-time zone, offering an advantage over traditional perpetual calendars that may rely on standard springs with limited durability.

Water resistant up to 5 BAR, approximately 50 meters, the watch has been rigorously tested, subjecting it to a pressure 25% greater than the guaranteed water resistance value to ensure it meets Panerai’s standards.

Matching with the dial and GMT hand, the new timepiece comes with an elegant dark blue alligator strap with handmade vintage patina finish as well as a more casual blue
rubber strap, making it versatile for various occasions. PAM01575 is available exclusively in Panerai boutiques.
